I have noticed a few websites (and classifieds on the Bangkok Post website) describing "serviced apartments" in the Bangkok area (ie, http://www.moveandstay.com/bangkok/, or http://www.housebythepond.com/ for example).

I was wondering why you, as seasoned veterans, chose hotels over apartments or vice-versa and why.  Also, what midigates your decision if you sometimes do either, etc.

Thanks!

Amadeus,

There's really little difference, except that, obviously, serviced apartments are more geared toward longer-term guests.  As examples, you will not usually find a stocked mini-bar in a serviced apt., but you might find a larger refrigerator, utensils and dishes.  Also, the better ones tend to have better TV/stereo equipment, and, sometimes, less frequent maid service.

There are many levels of service, and many such apartments require you to pay for 'extras', such as daily maid service, bedding, etc.  Others skirt the line, such as the President Park properties, including the ever-popular Grand President, which has great amenities, but is really closer to a hotel.

Obviously, monthly rates are better than daily at serviced apartments, but in the current climate, the hotels will cut you the same deal.

Bottom line - find a place you like that fits your budget, and make the best deal you can.  Money talks.  Longer stays will get preferential treatment, usually.

Mr Alan
I stay at service apartments because they usually have advertised weekly or monthly rates (without having to negotiate), and they have kitchenettes (with utensils). Serviced apartments also have larger 1 and 2 bedroom suites, but that is not a factor for me. No real difference that I can see between the two.

Which ever accommodation you get, make sure you know up front whether the price includes 10% service charge and 7% VAT (tax) that is normally charged on any room. Also some prices include American breakfast (ABF). Most short-term serviced apartment stays include electricity, water, etc, but make sure you check anyway.

Lastly, some places try to charge 5% for using a credit card, even though it is supposedly "illegal." Get an email from the hotel/apartment/travel agent documenting their credit card policy, and take a print out with you. Better yet, bring AMX or Visa traveler checks because most credit cards in the US charge cardholders about 3% for foreign currency transactions. Traveler checks get excellent exchange rates at most banks.

I'm  a big fan of Serviced apts.  Unless you are staying 2 weeks plus, the better ones are about the same as a good Hotel in terms of rates - but I find them better for many reasons - including (in no particular order)

1) No TV IN Bedroom - therefore no terrible thai programmes before/after sex.
2) Generally more privacy and less inquisitive staff/guests
3) Larger fridge (to stock with the alcoholic contents of nearest 7-11 - up to 5 times cheaper than minibars)
4) Generally very guest friendly
5) Much easier to chill out in and make your own

Mr Alan - Cooking utensils (55555) if you ever fel you want to (lmao)

I said “utensils,” not “cooking utensils.” I meant forks, knives, spoons, plates, drinking glasses, etc.  I think this is a US vs. UK language difference. We call the cooking stuff “pots and pans.”

I am planning a visit to Bangkok about October and have been looking into serviced apartments.

Is it possible to get them for just a week or maybe two?

Or do you have to rent them for a minimum of one month?

House by the Pond looks cool, anyone stayed there before? Girl-friendly or not?

The upper market serviced apartments, e.g. centerpoint, will cop weekly tenants, but are so pricey, you may as well stay at a Hotel, all of which will give you a special rate for week/month stays.  House by the pond a bit far down the soi - decent walk to the skytrain,  - some small apartments, but OK,handy, cheap - around 8,000bt a month- are Rivercourt, down sukhumvit 41, very near Emporium.
