I prefer the Thermae vs MacDonalds rivalry myself.
With Micky Ds at least one is ensured of getting "beef" that has some sort of quality control. ;)
If I am not mistaken, which I usually am, I think PackRipper's point was that trying to compare the various venues is a waste of time yet time and time again newbies continue to try to do exactly that.
If I asked, "Which is better, an evening at Eden or, 5 or more months in a hospital?" Would one know from the question that I have never been to the former but have done the later 3 times or know why I might have liked or disliked the later?
I think this is one "Q" that needs to be added to an FAQ, which I am still working on as I have time.
i.e. Q. Which is better, X or Y? A. No one can compare any two venues qualitatively or quantitatively and have that comparison applicable to everyone who may read such comparison. We all have our own likes and dislikes and the best that anyone can do is to read the separate accounts of either possible choice and make one's own decision.

The point about not being able to compare different types of place (Eden/Darlings) is well made (and I agree), and certainly this type of post recurring is annoying especially for the old hands. But it is a legitimate dilemma for the newbie.
From my perspective, shortly to visit BKK for the first time, and on this occasion with only a little free time for pleasure, I do have to
make tough choices in seeking that signature BKK experience. I too have narrowed my choice down to Eden and Darlings (for their respective, but different, two girl experiences).
Perhaps the way to resolve this is to post a Top 5 things for the first timer to do on a weekend in BKK. That list at least provides a menu from which to pick and choose.
FYI, Darlings gets my vote on this occasion. But then I figure I can walk into any bar in the world and pick up two women for a bit of interactive two girl action ;-)

The first time in bangkok section is certainly on the right lines, but, dare I say it, it doesn't offer any comparator - it is more "these are things to do in BKK" rather than "what no trip to BKK should be without".
It would presumably be wrong to endorse various establishments in the first trip to bangkok section - that is something that comes more from the Forum and its commentary - but there may be some scope to emphasise the experience rather than the possibilities.
Just some thoughts around the compare and contrast issue.
