Has anybody noticed a trend starting for Thai hotels to charge for the loan of swimming caps for girls who use their pool?
When last in Pattaya in March, stayed at the Eastinny Inn and they had introduced a charge for the loan of a swimming cap - no swimming cap and the girl cannot use the pool. The girls on reception were very embarrassed about it all and said the hotel was under new management and it was a new policy. The charge was not being applied to farang women as far as I could tell.
I wonder if the policy still applies at Eastinny Inn and also if any other hotels have cottoned onto this way of extracting more cash from visitors?

IMO, a nominal charge is completely valid for a cheap no-frills hotel. (Just as they are justified in charging for a hair-dryer.) Somebody has to pay the cost, why should it be me (since I bring my own net for my rapidly thinning hair).
I see no reason why they wouldn't also require a cap for farang women. I imagine they are just to gutless too go up to them and point out the rule.

As I recall it the rule about swimming caps only applied to people with long hair. So girls with short hair were allowed to use the pool without caps. That said, I also saw farang men with long hair who were using the pool but without swimming caps - I queried why that was but the hotel management were unable to say.
The Eastinny Inn hotel has a lot of BG trade, no different from other hotels in the Soi 8 area of Pattaya. To my mind the hotel appears to be making a judgement or statement about the personal hygene of these ladies in operating this policy, and at the same time using that as a device to extract more cash from male farang hotel patrons.
Fastmover's suggestion to insist on other add-ons before allowing ladies into the pool is creative. If they charge for those also then it sounds like a real money spinner. I will pass that suggestion on to the management next time I pass by. Perhaps the hotel will also stop discriminating between the sexes and the nationalities in the way it operates this policy?
