Hi am going to be living in bangkok for 6-months starting in August. I am currently in the process of looking for a serviced apartment. I need to live in the business district near wireless road, the area where grand president is. I am trying to stay at around 700-800 a month for a studio or maybe higher, and I am considering Royal President. What is your advice to get a good deal, I know I can use my 6-month comittment to my advantage. Any recommendations where to stay in this area, a good gym is important to me. Finally, is it possible to use priceline.com for a 6-monh stay? never used it before. Thank you

I have not heard of serviced apartments being on Priceline, but I could be wrong. This is an international forum, so 700-800 does have much specificity to most people. Is this in US dollars? I would send an email to the Royal President and ask for a 15% discount off the monthly internet rate for a 6 month stay and see what happens. That should get you below $800 for the smallest studio. Always negotiate in Thai baht currency.

After I posted I noticed I forgot to put down the currency. Yes in US dollars. I will give it a try to see if they will cut it down by 15%. What does rack rate mean? I see at the landmark they have an internet rate which is 40% cheaper than the rack rate. The landmark looks so incredible I am going to try to negotiate with them, and if I could get their smallest room for 1000 a month I would go for it.

I think it would be difficult to get rates that cheap for the Landmark, but go ahead and try it. Be aware that most hotels charge 10% service fee and 7% VAT on top of room rates. Some serviced apartments may include those fees in the quoted rate, especially for a monthly rate. Also check on other fees such as breakfast, internet, etc. You can edit any of your own posts. The Rack Rate is the travel industry's term for the official full published retail room rate. Somewhat similar to the retail store concept of a full list price. Most seasoned travelers try to get a discount off the rack rate. But just about the time you get use to paying less than the rack rate and you think you will never again pay the full rack rate, you reach a destination during peak season where you would be glad to pay the rack rate just to get a room in an otherwise sold out situation. Some hotels discount very little if anything from the rack rate, other hotels will offer significant discounts from the full rack rate, particularly on the slower days when occupancy rates are lower. There is no fixed rule of thumb. It just depends. Best if you check and compare rates. Beefa

I stayed for about six months in a new block called Wittayu Complex, its a the the bottom of Whittayu or Wireless road on the Petburi side. Its nice and new, I had a two bedroom, two bathroom with kitchen condo. The price was 25,000 bht per month. It was a good place and is the area you want. Hope this helps.

What?!?! I stayed for 3 months 2 years ago and the apartment was 12000 bht a month! 2 bedrooms, AC, TV, Fridge! $800 = 32000 bht, that would leave me 24000 bht for some more fun!!! Maybe I am a cheapo, but the apt were surely nice. Better than some hotels. If you search on the net, you will get studio apts for as little as 5000 bht/month, clean (no carpets, sorry). It won't be too hard to find places near the biz district.

"The Rack Rate is the travel industry's term for the official full published retail room rate." The reason it is called the "rack rate" is that in the days before personal computers (like when I worked for a hotel during my college days), there was a "rack" at the front desk which showed all the rooms, the standard rate for that room, whether they were occupied, available/clean, or available/dirty. These "racks" were standard items made by companies that supplied specialized items to the hotel industry. The room status had to be manually maintained when someone checked-in, checked-out, and per the housekeeping report.

and the last time someone in the US paid the rack rate was probably 1960. Everyone is entitled to a discount now days and they actually think they are getting one. In reality supply and demand sets the rates

I would be intrested in hearing of any discounts that you are offered for a six months stay. I stay at Admiral Suites when I am in town, and when I asked about a 6 months stay, there reduction against the monthly rate was all most nothing................ But as they are nearly allways full that may have some reason for it.
