Hi guys, I enjoy reading your postings a lot. I will be in Bangkok next month. I am puzzled by these websites that offer to mediate for hotel accommodation. The one says it's full, the other says rooms are available. Is my suspicion founded, or is this normal?

Sometimes when you make a on-line reservation, they will tell you later that they are full. Some computer systems have real-time information about capacity, and others do not. Usually you can contact them for verification.

I guess some hotels give a contingent to each of their travel agents. Maybe the conflicts result thereof. I made only good experiences with online reservations, although the first time I was not sure, if it would work out. But I cannot complain about it, even priceline seems to work properly. Check the posts there too.

I have made some reservations via on-line Thailand travel agents, but they contacted me soon after to tell me that the hotel is already booked and offered to find another place for me to stay.
I don't think they do that on purpose, it is just that their web sites do not have up to date information on hotel bookings. When someone makes a reservation, they have to contact the hotel to verify.
Usually if you use the hotel web site, they have more up-to-date information, but prices may be higher.

OK, that makes it easier to understand. But then again what about the "Instant Room Availability Check" I see on these web sites? If it indicates that rooms are available, can I bank on it?

All I can say is that if you make a reservation and it turns out that no rooms are available, they will usually let you know within one or two days.
Some travel agencies may have accurate real-time information on their websites, but I don't think anyone on this forum can guarantee their accuracy, especially since you didn't identify which travel agency you are referring to. If you want more infomation, contact the travel agency. Some of them have live chat available or you can email them.

Always check directly with the hotel website. Often the chains like Marriott and Starwood (Westin, Sheraton) will have a guarantee to beat all prices. I found a great rate for the JW Marriott in Hong Kong at another site, booked at Marriott and then filled out the form pointing to this other website and Marriott gave me the other rate with a further 25% off.

Interesting! Thank you, guys, for responding.
The sign "These rates cannot be had from the hotel directly" is not appropriate at all times, I gather. I'll try the various ways.
With the AIDS-conference in July it is getting difficult to find accommodation at a lot of places. I'm trying to book the Tai-Pan. No response yet.
