Dear All, Finally making a long awaited return to LOS - have not been back in 4 years! Am finalising accommodation and flight packages and have the a choice of the following places: Novotel Louts Bangkok Sofitel Silom Bangkok Meritus Suites State Tower Pathumwan Princess Hotel Shangri-la Hotel Bangkok I have reviewed alot of posts already and seems that most of these are gf. Only one I have no info on is the Meritus. Can anyone provide some feedback on this hotel/apartment especially if it is g/f. If anyone has any other comments or recommendations on the above would appreciate it as well... Finally are there any Australians who can point me in the right direction of bars/hotels that get the Australian Asia Pacific Channel - want to keep up to date and watch some Aussie Rules Footy during my recovery periods! Appreciate any help. I promise to provide reports on any miss adventures! Cheers snap PS: If anyone is Shanghai bound let me know I can reciprocate with some local knowledge

Can't help you with the hotels you mention as they are all a bit too posh for me but if you get down to Pattaya checkout the Roo Bar (AKA Jan Bar) on walking street which is run by and heavily populated with Aussies who are well into Aussie Rules. Cheers

Sofitel Silom or Pathumwan Princess for their location: very easy to go around the town starting from these hotels.....

Shanghaisnap here indicates that the Pathumwan Princess hotel is GFriendly, is that so?

Shanghai Hotels I go in & out of Shanghai quite often. Normally I stay at the HuaMao Airport Hotel (Hongqiao) if I need an domestic flight or to be picked up by a factory as it's an easy location to find/ get in & out/ or take the 30RMB bus to PUDONG Airport. Otherwise I stay at the EDUCATION Hotel, just off Huai Hai Middle Road, near the big pirate goods market. Price is 180-300RMB. Any better suggestions? Also, what about nightlife in Shanghai? There's plenty of upscale places but what about for those of us on a slightly lower budget. Thanks

Recent reports on this forum have indicated that there is some ambiguity on the guest policy at Sofitel Silom. Try looking here: http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=7&topic=361&start=0 I have not stayed there in 18 months, and liked the hotel. The pool is a disappointment, however. I have stayed at the Shangri-La 6 times, and it is my favorite, but I usually upgrade the room. Their standard rooms in the Shangri-La wing are just OK, IMHO, standard rooms in the newer Krungthep Wing are much nicer but more expensive. Otherwise, a Horizon room ($50++ upgrade) is very nice and doesn't break the bank. Suite upgrades ($65++ upgrade) give you lots of room. Horizon suite ($120++ upgrade) gets you a silk sofa and some funky artwork. I think you may need to join Golden Circle, free on their web site, to get these upgrades. It's on the river, far from the action, but very near the BTS. I've taken lots of girls there, but negotiated price beforehand, and really enjoyed the nasty looks I got from older female guests (women my age) on the elevators.

Meritus Suites is very new (it is the service apartments below Sirocco and Mezzaluna). I think it has only been open about 3 months. To the best of my knowledge they still havent completed work on the building (swimming pool etc.). Unless you can get a specific recommendation from someone who has stayed there recently, I would recommend you stay elsewhere. The Sofitel Silom changed owner and management contract about 18 months ago. Since then I think they have been much stricter of GF policy. Again unless you can get a specific recommendation from someone who has stayed there recently, I would look elsewhere.

shanghaisnap, >>Novotel Louts Bangkok<< Not sure if they let any 'louts' in but they sure give guests a hard time. I like hotels taking the girls ID they dont have to demean the girl while doing it, they kept both me and my guest waiting for ages to give back her ID. Don't like the sales tactics with cards offering beer and snacks, toiletries and robes etc for sale all over the room, a loundry slip and bag was laid out on the bed after each time the room was cleaned. The hotel is very tired looking and the only thing I liked about it was it came free with AmEx points. I suggest you check out Rembrandt Suites on Soi 18 right next door to the hotel of the same name. A one bedroom suite 2500 per night just mention nanapong.com for this discounted rate. http://www.rembrandtbkk.com UKP.
