Folks,...
Newbie here... will be visiting in December for the first time, for about a week. I have narrowed my choices down to 3 joints. I am hoping the BKK gods will help me tip the scales.
MANHATTAN:
Seems like an ok choice... good location, ABF, pool, guest-friendly... except for the ongoing construction... which may be annoying at times.
I wrote to Manhattan staff. They acknowledged my concerns, and agreed to get me a room on the front side to avoid facing construction (assuming that construction indeed is only limited to the backside when I get there in December). Will this help... or is the guy blowing smoke? I would hate to have another jackhammer pounding at the same time... you know...
MAJESTIC:
Thinking about getting a Double Superior there. The place seems clean, guest friendly. Main drawback is absence of a swimming pool. I am a bit of a sucker for fun/frolic around the pool. Although I am not sure if the pool would be enjoyable in December... or would the weather be too cold for it anyway?
In case a Double Superior is not available... is the Single Studio or Single Superior too small? Should I be concerned about the guest policy in that case?
ROYAL ASIA LODGE:
I am eyeing the Jr. Suite here. The place seems alright: guest friendly, neat, etc. Only hangup for me is the ~500 meter walk to/from Sukhumvit. I would love to be able to casually stroll to the hot spots, befriend sinful ladies, get sloshed, and stagger back to the base camp to pursue the forbidden... but the distance makes me wonder. I am physically fit... so it is not the walk, but the sweat and logistics that bother me more. How bad is it? The hotel tuk-tuk can be a bit of a wait at times, I have heard.
... so share your thoughts comrades... and help a fellow monger realize his full potential...
[PS: I am also waiting to hear back from Royal President staff. I may just roll with RP on this one after all...]

I have stayed at the Royal Asia a number of times over the past couple of years. I have never had any cause for complaint. The tuk-tuk is okay... the delay is mostly because of the travel time. Even the tuk-tuk needs to cover the distance and can do it in finite amount of time ! The rooms are good, beds big enough and the bathrooms are clean. And, if you so wish, they also have a decent collection of books for you to pick up and read. They are very helpful as well. And, you get a taxi to the airport for a mere 300 bahts: way below the standard rate you pay normally!

I've stayed at the Manhatton on my last two trips. Room 502 last trip, no noise, the front of the building was quiet. The breakfast buffet can't be beat Girl friendly as long as you pay for a double. A real value for the bt1060 a night price. It is directly between NANA, and soi cowboy. Darlings is right across suk. The rooms are nice, the amenities are great.

I've stayed at the Manattan, the location is unbeatable, you can walk anywhere, the 2am shouffle in right down the street, I wanted pool, I saw it ones...no time for it thou  There is a huge salt-water pool around Koh Samui...
Good breakfast buffet, girl friendly, (book duoble) very helpful staff. I booked from this site, US$ 21.00/per night in June.
Minibar priced reasonably, no need to restack! Did I say location is unbeatable?

Now, some follow up questions about Manhattan:
1. Is there a charge to use the swimming pools (indoor one, as well as the outdoor one), fitness center, and the sauna?
2. What are my chances of getting a room opposite to the construction site when I arrive in December? I’ll book a Standard Twin, probably from http://www.Resorthotel.net (rate is 1070 bhat, ~$27).
3. I was asked name of the second adult in the initial inquiry form for Standard Twin from http://www.Resorthotel.net. I made up a name … and sent the form in. Can this constitute a problem …? Obviously, if they check, the name will not match.
Chime in mates … your input will be much appreciated.

Chances are good - you booked in advance. They swapped me in May, when I asked them to. When I pre-booked last December, I was put on the non-construction side in the first place.

Shouldn't have put the name in there - resorthotel.net doesn't care about the second name, even if booking a double. Good organization, by the way. Same place I use.
I doubt the Manhatten will give you much trouble. Just say "she decided not to come, but I still want the double." They'll understand.

No charge for fitness centre but unless you are into weights it is absolute crap. Remainder consists of a treadmill and an exercise bike. Treadmill will not work and like exercise bike look as if they have not been used for years.
