While I have been very satisfied with Centre Point in the past, and continue to be so, during my last stay they were renovating the rooms with energy savers (the kinda that requires your card to be in the device in order for your electrical devices, like /c to keep running) - no problem with that, per se. They also installed a new firewall, which had the unfortunate side-effect of blocking all of our video conferencing (iChat a/v), depriving mnay of my stateside buddies of their entertainment Upon pointing this out, the manager (a great guy, by the way), checked with their IT, and was told that these ports were being blocked from their ISP, because many 'virus come through these ports'. Clearly, that's not so, but also I doubt this was ISP generated, as even attempts to initiate a videoconference using Rendezvous (Zeroconf) fell flat - and that's not going through the ISP. The problems with the router, and their IT folks have no clue. This isn't surprising, most IT folks have no clue, and I don't fault the manager for not knowing. I plan to, as usual, follow-up with an e-mail about my visit, pointing out this foible, and I'll see what comes off it - if they can't fix it, I will most likely need to find new accomodations that don't have the same kind of blockage. - all of us techies know that this is a load of bullocks
- I suspect the IT blokes just installed the firewall with the default settings and have not a clue (as you said)
if you speak good Thai you might be able to convince the IT blokes to let you have a look at their setup Be careful of the face thing. Try and blame any changes you incorporate as the IT boss's idea (not your own)

Center Point Petchburi 15. I was told that the upgrades to the 'IT systems' expanded to all Center Points. In my case, it worked one day, and stopped working the next. Harry

[Edit] I have no idea what I was smoking when I posted this please skip this post and read the next one from me. [End Edit] Most large companies use a multi-tiered network security strategy. Passive systems like Firewalls should be used to establish DMZs to any outside lines not just the Internet, they should also be used to partition logical units like, different business units and server farms. Active IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems) should also be installed on all servers and access points. An IDS monitoring and event reporting procedure would also need to be implemented. Anyway how large is this company?

Opps! I thought Center Point was a company, not an apartment complex. It looked like pretty weak security for a corp. hzink - I hope you have some type of personal firewall on your PC, probable anyone in the complex can see/hack your PC. If a lot of people in the building have broadband, many of them will have added wireless access points. With a good 802.11G card and a little help you should be able to get "Free" internet access. If you get a directional antenna you may even be able to reach buildings near you. If you setup wireless access remember to setup MAC address level security so others can’t get a free ride on your access. Buffalotech Look at the antenna options at the bottom of the page.

I would guess that the new firewall implemented some sort of network translation AND port blocking...A lot of hotels stateside that offer "free" broadband connection will block common VTC ports, they provide free internet as a convienience, not to save your business money... Local ISP started blocking VPN connections through home/consumer broadband accounts, fording upgrades to costlier business-class accounts. So along these lines, CentrePoint has a business center right? Do they offer fee based VTC? This could explain why your software is now blocked...Or I could just be talking out of my ass!

Kehper I aint smart enough to know if you are talking out of your ass or not. I do know, that I can connect to my VPN with no problem. My problem is with WSTFTP. I am unable to FTP files up to my server. Does that mean anything?

I got a Mac, so that's not an issue for me - at all.

What's the point of hijacking access points, when Centre Point porvides RJ-45 in every room, and I have my own access point I brought? The point is not access, the point is havikng lost ports and services because of a more restrictive firewall. Harry
