i will be visiting bkk for only the 2nd time in mid november. the first was 2 years ago.
stayed at shangri la. very nice hotel but seemed out of the way for night time activities.
thinking of staying at sheraton grand sukhumvit to be closer to the to everything. any thoughts on this hotel? is friendly and what have you heard in general?

Was there (as in the Bar) on Saturday, Lobby OK, service poor, Drinks excessively expensive (325 Baht for a mixed drink!). Location is good for Cowboy & Soi 22/33 and only one Sky Train stop from Nana.

This hotel is my personal favorite in Bangkok. Rooms and service is the best in Asia IMHO. I have taken many girls back so no problems with that side. Yes the rooms are expensive but in the end that is a personal choice. However be aware that I found once girls know you are in this hotel they do not expect you to be cheap.

I've stayed here twice, no problems bringing girls in. I booked on Priceline and paid $70 USD + tax. The rooms are slightly better than standard Shangri-La rooms IMHO. In particular, I enjoyed soaking in the deep tub. Rooms include CD boom box, so bring your own music CDs. The Sunday afternoon brunch is highly recommended.

Very nice hotel walking distance to soi cowboy and nana. I stayed there last year for a few nights and it was very nice, great deal considering I got it pretty cheap on price-line.
Personally I would choose the Landmark over the Sheraton- I think because it is closer to Nana, or maybe because I have stayed there so often, I feel more compfortable bringing girls back there then to the Sheraton. Sheraton almost felt too fancy to bring BG's back too.
Just my opinion. I am sure anyone who stays at the SGS will enjoy it though- it is a very nice well run place.

Big fan of the Landmark, stayed there on my first few visits.
Sheraton a very nice hotel as well. Stayed once and found the staff/rooms etc to be really good. Can't really go wrong.
A couple of girls were reluctant to leave these hotels when I was there, I take it that it was due to the fantastic seeing to they had the night before, not the luxury of the rooms 
I can wish.

Based on things I've read here and elsewhere, I'm just about ready to go ahead with the Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit for my 2 week vacation in January. Question to the brothers who know the property: is there a more desireable side / floor of the building (better view, rooms, amenities, air conditioning etc.) ? Also, it's not absolutely clear to me whether you actually have to book a double to pay no girl fee...can someone settle that question for me definitvely? Finally, I'm traveling with a friend - wonder if the hotel has double suites w/shared living room but completely private/separate bedrooms with their own full baths?

Yes, book double, it is the same price. Ask for a high floor. Great hotel, probably my favourite of anywhere.
Also, sign up for their preferred guest program. You usually get a better floor and sometimes an upgrade. I have only stayed on the North side and I can look out and see the lights from Cowboy. However, you won't be spending a lot of time looking out your window.
