Any info on good hotels that are not near any nightlife spots? I will be in BKK next week with my wife, and need a place to stay that won't alert her as to the real reason I'm called to BKK so often on business. Something near the 'touristy' things..and by the way, what ARE the touristy things? I've been to BKK about 2 dozen times, and I have no idea what real tourists do there. Any help is appreciated.

I have taken my wife and daughter to this hotel and have recommended this hotel to others on this board who are bringing the wife to BKK. Everyone has liked this hotel because it's away from the night life but your close to MBK. It's a good 3.5 star hotel.

Edit in, I would add the Sheraton Royal Orchid to RTB list. I've stayed there and it a great hotel. More expensive then the Twin Towers.

For my two Penarth, I would recommend the Asia as it is adjacent to the BTS if you need to slip away for an hour or so….

MisterB,
You just have plenty of choice, depending how far you want to be from city centre.
Among others, I could suggest Marriott Resort & Spa, Royal River, Novotel Bangna, Rama Gardens, Montien Riverside, Grand Tower Inn Rama 6,...
depend on your budget

Asia Hotel is right at BTS, reasonably priced, and is pretty close to many shopping and restaurant places, malls, etc.. Great location for non-p4p.

I think proper tourists go to Chatuchuk market, do the Sunday river cruise from the end of the BTS line (Saphan Taksin), visit the Grand Palace, and do a day trip to Ayattuya. If they are feeling naughty, they look at sex shows in patpong. They do not go to Pattaya, go for soapies, etc. One more thing - under no circumstances should you bring your wife anywhere near Sukhumvit after dark.

The touristy stuff is Wat Po, The Grand Palace, a ride up the river on a public boat, the marble temple, the teakwood house, and the floating market. Go to thailand tourism for more info.

If you can afford it, by all means, stay at the Oriental...

I always took my visitors on this dinner cruise:

Its really authentic, excellent food...And not a cheesy "buffet" on a huge aircon river yacht. A real river experience...BTW, BG's love it too!

About how much is that Loy Nava cruise per person? Something that a person on a moderate budget can afford?

If I remember correctly, the dinner cruise is around 1200b per person (+drinks). This includes an excellent meal, pickup/dropoff from where ever and the cruise is a tour of all the sights along the chao phaya...No, not BANGKOK cheap, but still well worth it. I think some of the cheesier aircon-busboat tours are around 700-800b+.
