Maybe if you're trying to get a hotel room in peak season, I believe a lot of the hotels are asking for payment up front as during Dec and Jan the hotels are becoming full and they need insurances that you're going to be staying there and they need the money to hold the reservation for you.

I can recommend Go Thailand. It’s a very reliable company and they are also the local agent for some
German Tour operators and that’s the reason why
the prices are so good cause they handle a lot
of guests and are well known at the hotels.

There's nothing wrong with a hotel asking for full or partial payment before you arrive, so long as there is a refund guarantee if you have to cancel. Besides, if you pay in advance, which I prefer to do, that's one less thing you have to worry about once you get there.
Just be sure to print out and save those email receipts just in case of a snafu in their system.
