You've just had a great late afternoon session, the full-on GF Experience, and now you're ready to hit town to catch some live music, maybe while having a bite to eat, or a comedy show, with your GF du jour in tow.

"The Cottage" in Chiangmai comes to mind as a good example of the former - excellent live music.  And I remember that there used to be a Thai comedy club in Pattaya many years ago that the TG's just loved.  I only understood one word in a hundred, but the sense of fun that pervaded the place made it a very enjoyable club to visit, even for a farang with limited Thai.

So you ask her where she wants to go, and get back the stock "Up to you!"  "No - I want you to choose - we go where you want."  "Up to you!!"

So where DO you take your GF if you want to have a fun night out,  want to get away from the P4P scene, and explore somewhere where the Thais go to have fun?

I've tried the Big Ratchada discos - they're fun, but hardly intimate.  The Glass Home, a live music restaurant that I spotted on this forum, turned out to be disappointing (rather a cold atmosphere and so-so food).  Tony's was surprisingly good - a smallish disco with floor shows.

But I'm looking for somewhere more laid back and quieter, where you have a conversation and perhaps some nibblies or a full meal, and listen to some decent sounds (or a few jokes) in a pleasant environment.

Any suggestions?

There are some nice Irish Pubs. You can eat, drink, listen to music and have fun.

Try this thread.  Quite a few suggestions on where to take your TG for the evening/dinner.

Thanks MM3 - the Brew Pavilion sounds just like the kind of place I'm looking for.  Did a Google search on it, and came up with this useful link:

Brew Pavilion is OK for reasons outlined in the other thread. Tawandaeng is a bit more out of the way, sometimes too packed (difficult to get a table on weekends) but definitely has more character and style, Brew Pavilion is cold and hollow compared to Tawandaeng.

I would also suggest Bar Bu Ree on Soi Ekamai, about
half a mile off sukhumvit on the left hand side. Pleasant garden setting, jazz music. Great food. Cheap booze by the bottle.

Groundpounder,

Sounds like the Brown Sugar suits your specs.  It's an intimate Western style jazz club with mellow combos not too loud to drown out conversation, in suitably aged atmosphere, with small menu of food/snacks.  It's on Sarasin Rd. near Lumpini Park.

You said that you also want a place where Thais go, and as an aded treat there are several small Thai music spots adjoining, so you don't have to go groundpounding far for some well rounded listening for both of you.

All the above are packed on Fridays and Saturdays however - best to go during the week but check ahead for which nights that they have live music.

If you want to impress, nearby there's the new Conrad Hotel lounge, with good singer/combos in upscale atmosphere.  Similarly there's the Bamboo Bar in the Oriental Hotel, but that's on the Riverfront.  For both these places however she needs to dress up.  If she doesn't have something nce handy, stop in at someplace like the Pratunam Market area and have her pick out a long frilly black evening dress - only 2-300 Baht.  TGs dress up incredibly.

One nice way to end the evening is at the top of the Landmark, sitting around the Piano Bar, listening to smooth music, sipping Irish Coffes, looking out at the city lights, and getting it on with GFE chat up.  (Well - not to end the evening...)

Check out the listings in the Bangkok Post entertainment section for special musical events.

And take some pictures for her to remember - if you want to continue the GFE.

If you're in BKK during mid-late Nov. let me know - will hook up with TGF and you guys for a good LOS evening...and all that jazz.

Also recommend Brown Sugar.  No live music Mondays.

In addition, Saxophone Pub near Victory Monument has live jazz.  More seating than Brown Sugar.

I am hardly the right person to recommend as I have never been resident in BKK, but I have had a pretty  good time at the Huntsman's Pub in the cellar of Hotel Landmark. The female  company always liked it too. Nice rounded seating where you can sit next to each other whilst you eat or drink and always a really goood band! playing not too loud so you can talk if you like.

liftoff: Concur on Huntsman's Pub.

thaiaficionado:  Concur on the Saxaphone for its variety of terrific jazz.  Recommend wholeheartedly for the music, but not for intimate/conversation.  But that's just me.

I try to be a music afficionado too and am becoming a Thai afficionado - so I dig your handle.  All in all, I believe BKK has to have some of the best musical diversity of any city in the world.  On any weekend you can find anything from European Chamber music, to Classical Symphony, to Western Pop, Jazz, Dixieland, and Rock (not among my favorites), all the way to that incredible Thai and Chinese music to meditate by.

Love LOS.

I like the lobby lounge at the Bangkok Palace Hotel.  Lucky and Naroon play there.  They played for many years at the Nana Hotel Cocktail Lounge before they changed everything.  Great easy listening music.
