Had a couple of drinks at Hu’u and Synbar last night before heading to the clubs. Both of them extremely well-designed, upscale, trendy lounge bars.
Hu’u is in the Asctott Hotel on 187, South Satorn road, 026766611.
Truly and eye-pleasing place with -ground to ceiling windows, simple yet slick interior with an impressive bar that stretches all the way to the ceiling. This place is know for its potent and expertly mixed drinks and yours truly can confirm this. My white Russian was mixed to perfection and the content of the glasses seemed to increase with each round. My companion goes there just for the margaritas. I am not a fan of that beverage, but she swears by it at Hu’u.
Hu’u is the official Hed Kandi bar in Bangkok and hence the music was well-mixed lounge and beach house in the trend of Café del Mar and Buddha bar. The owner is also the DJ on most occasions and he knows his stuff. All in all an impeccable place to enjoy a couple of superior drinks before going for action at CM2 – which is right around the corner. A good choice as well to bring a TG. She will be impressed. Even the hi so ones.

A more psychedelic interior in then Hu’u, covered with a carpet with tiny christmas lights inside. Quite unique. The place also has a constantly shifting color scheme. Not a place to go when you are on acid. You might never get out. The interior is very rounded and faultless without comparison. Just go to take a look at the DJ booth and those half-egg shaped chairs pending from the ceiling. Try them out before you start drinking though, because getting out of them after a couple of refreshments might be quite an adventure.
Aside the interior, the atmosphere of both places reminded me of KM5 in Ibiza. Except for the fact that in Ibiza we would stay at KM5 till 1am and then go to the clubs. If you do that here, all you will find are locked doors.
Oh well, one of these years I will get used to this despicable closing hour.

'Like KM5', that is quite a recommendation!! Now one of the great things about KM5 is that it is a good place to chill out (in fact one time I went I was 'hyperactive' and had to leave cos it was so chilled).
Bangkok is sadly lacking those sort of bars - only Face (Suk 38) or To Die For (H1, Thonglor) seem to fit that description. I havent been to Synbar or Hu'u before because I imagined them to be a bit 'stiff' especially as they are located in 'hotels'.
Anyway, would you describe them as 'chill out' bars or more just 'trendy' hotel bars along the lines of V9 at Sofitel Silom. Arent these places just full of suits?
Which is the most chilled? Which one would you take a hippy chick to - a girl who considers the social highlight of every month to be the full moon party!!

You can pick up a chick anywhere, but I wouldn’t expect “wham-bam-thank-you-mam” freelancers in either places. As mentioned, this is a place where you go for decent drink before going to Q or Mystique or so.
Strangely enough both owners told me the places only get busy in the week, and not in the weekends. The official opening of Hu-u is the 20th of this month. Go there now and ask for an invitation. I’ll be there.

Although posted in the club thread, these places are not really clubs, but lounge/chill-out bars. No dance floors or something like that. Hu’u has a dining area with a quite renowned chef apparently. Also, the toilet is worth a visit, just for the washing basin.

You got that right. These places would fit nice INSIDE a club as well. That is to say, when clubs would stay open till 7am, so you can wind down when at sunrise with some lounge music; and enjoy a cocktail while sinking away in a plushy chair.

Bah. I wouldn’t come in with a short and flip flops, but the atmosphere was pretty relaxed. I noticed at Synbar that the suits were sitting in the lobby bar and the younger crowd was inside Synbar.

I haven’t been V9, so I have no frame of reference, but I would consider them lounge bars. It’s a world apart form dreadful places like Spasso and Rivas.

Hu’u more hi so, Synbar more trendy and younger crowd oriented. Oddly enough, quite the opposite is reflected in the prices of the drinks.
In Hu’u we had 2 margaritas and 4 white Russians for 1400B.
In Synbar 1 margaritas and 2 white Russians for 1100baht. That’s almost double.

I would drop her at Koa Sarn Road and come alone. f***ing baggy-clothed rif raf. Oh, I am awfully sorry, did I say that out loud? 
Seriously. Take her to Synbar. Tell her to take a shower and wear shoes though.

BTW you should definitely try Face Bar 200m down Suk 38 on the left handside. 'To die for' - H1 - is also worth a visit pre a Thonglor evening. Both places are good for hanging out with mates or TGFs, rather than pick up joints.
