True enough. Looking back at my post, I can't believe I posted 99%. Must have been 'shooting from the groin' that night. But with a little charm (+ the right presentation package.... clothes, car, cash), I still maintain that it is rather high (% that you'll get the twizzart on the first night). "Do you want to go to the next party?" Is almost always accepted. And the "next party" after some deliberation in my car, 5 minutes later..... is always ordering something in or getting noodles on the way and watching DVDs at my apartment.
And once you get to my apartment, you're screwed. Don't worry, I'll slip you some cash in the morning.

There are two ways to take girls out at KTV places: there's "off" and there's "seu deum" (buy drinks). It depends on the KTV place which they offer. If a place doesn't have "off", it will almost always allow "seu deum". If they use (when speaking Thai) the word "off", it means (in my understanding) the customer is entitled to sex if he wants it, though there may be an additional pre-agreed kha tua involved in addition to the fee paid to the house. If they use the word "seu deum", there are no guarantees and it's common, as you say, to just go to dinner, disco or whatever without any sexual aspect at all. With seu deum, you buy some number of "drinks" typically 10 or 15 depending on the day of the week; the girl gets her usual percentage of the drinks (something like 100 baht per drink out of a cost to the customer of 300 baht).
If you want to know whether there's a guarantee or not, the question to ask is "tee nii mee off mai" (do you have "off" here?) If they say yes, then it means there is a guarantee. If they say no, it means there isn't, though you can almost certainly still "seu deum" and try to persuade her with charm/money. In my experience the word "off" in the member club/KTV scene has a specific, well-understood meaning.
My impression is that the majority of Thai places don't have off, whereas the majority of Japanese places do.
The off/no off distinction is quite a significant issue to the girl's self-image. If a girl does "off", there's no way she can pretend to herself that she is anything other than a prostitute. At places that don't have "off", most of the girls don't seem to think of themselves as prostitutes: although they are "phuuying tamngarn glarng kheun" (women who work at night), they do not see themselves as "phuuying haa gin" (i.e. prostitute), although mainstream society tends to lump all "phuuying glarng kheun" together.

Well, as I said I'm no epert on KTV (I pprobably should have minded my own business) but I fully agree with your last paragraph. Nonetheless in other types of establishments just because a girl does go for sex with some guys doesn't mean she will with every guy.

When you say you order "something in" (I know you mean food), who do you call? I do not know of any place I can call late at night -the hours when one may most likely do so. I know where to call until 10pm during weekdays and midnight on Fri & sat. But beyond those hours ... I am at a loss.

PJ is definitely right as mentioned in my earlier post, as far as I can observe, it is not easy to hook someone at KTV joint especially you are first timer. Not all of them will be willing to have sex with customer and most of them will only do so after they have known long enough and uh..... some kind of feeling has been cultivated through few karaoke session. Of course, knowing to speak Thai is one great advantage as interaction is important. Good luck to everyone if someone happens to try.....

Of course, any clever working girl knows it's more "prudent" to harpoon whales (with less frequency) than to skim for minnows every night. Ask the eskimos, you can feed the whole village for a year if you find a fat one.

As for ordering in, there's a late night hour kitchen at my apartment (to about 2am). "Aharn tam sang" Also, we'll often just stop by Huay Kwang market (which has a much better selection of food + eye candy). "Yeah, we could eat here, but I'd rather sit in the air conditioned cool of my apartment, na... + we can go ahead and watch movies while we eat."

I think PhiiJames and Packrippers comments together should be archived as a KTV primer and/or FAQ (especially including the special meaning of "off" and all the useful Thai phrases). And, of course, this gives even more reason for us to build a list of karaoke joints and the current status of whether they "mee off" or just "seu deum."
By the way, what does the "kha" in "kha dtua" mean?

it means 'cost'
in this case..... kha tua = "cost of body"
can also be used in the fee to hire/sign to a contract a photographer, model, artist, athlete, etc. as well.
