The Grace Coffee shop was raided because the area is frequented by Arabs. The CIA has operatives posted there too. These operatives look and act like regular tourists and they are on the look out for terrorist cells.
The Thai government is under a lot of pressure from the US to crack down. The cops have a bigger agenda.
Areas that are frequented by tourists are being targeted. Like recently in Bali, Kenya and Israel every week.
I am not trying to scare anybody but Nana Plaza and Patopng are very crowded places. So please be on the look out and be safe.

do you think terrorists would target places where there are double the amount local (thai) people than farang? i doubt so!
if there are any targets in thailand it would be more probably some hotel in phuket, samui or pattaya frequented by some western package tourists. this way you can really hit a lot of western people. may be also on a night when the us navy has its recreation in pattaya. certainly a much better target than patpong or nana!
P.S. by the way it is not only the grace coffee shop which was raided but everything concerning nightlife inthailand as it is more about a crackdown on drugs and underage girls than anything about some arabs!

Hopefully I am wrong. I do agree about Phuket, Pattaya and other resorts as you have stated.
The FBI should have cracked down here in the US, instead they used their valuable resources busting hookers in New Orleans. About 30 agents were assigned to the task for a few months. You know they were having a good time so they must have prolonged their investigation. During this time known terrorists were running around freely.
Hopefully the Thai police is not making the same mistake or they are just trying to show a presence to scare away any potential threat. During the course of this action innocent bar girs will get busted. Thailand cannot afford this kind of threat and they will do what ever it takes to stop it.
The WTC is in my back yard and if someone told me it would get hit I would have thought they were crazy.

q-bar goit raided...n u mean to say that they actually picked up few ppl who seemed high for a test? that sux, cuz i usually go clubbin aroun' town - and dont expect somebody to just come n do like that...since we do ddrink....sometimes the music is juz to fun to dance....well anywz....for some info - narcissus got raided last 2 weeks too..but last fri, sat - it wuz packed..

I agree with Griffin. I really doubt that Grace is being raided for purposes of Al Qaeda cells. That is a little bit far-fetched. Plus, there are two Navy ships en route to Thailand and Singapore. Im pretty sure they will target those areas frequented by U.S. Navy and not a local tourist area (Pattaya). Being ex-Navy myself... I am familiar with the reports and I still have close friends that email me about little things, when they can.
I just think that they have been raiding the under 20 year olds due to their high intake with alcohol and drugs. Heck, they just raided a club in RCA for drugs and minors... they are doing that all around.

Gentlemen,
Fact 1: The Thai people have NEVER been happy to have the reputation as a sex playground and to see falangs here with TGs who are acting inappropriately. In the past they absolutely needed the "sex tourists" because the other tourism sectors did not provide enough income and the country was much poorer.
Fact 2: Thailand has since developed even more sensitivity about thier international image. Thier tourism industry has expanded greatly and they do not have to rely on the "sex tourists" as much (or at least that's what they hope). This trend was also spurred by the concern over the AIDS threat.
Fact 3: A little over a year ago, Mr. Purachai -- the Interior Minister -- formally announced and launched his "Social Order Campaign" which is all about making Thais behave in a way that he and other conservatives consider proper and to make Thailand look more "respectable". Much to everyone's surprise, including his fellow politicians and the cops who work for him, he has followed through despite pressure and resistance to stop from those cops and politicians who have interests in the industry and/or recive bribes from it. He has been able to continue because mainstream society supports him.
These facts are all verifiable and observable. Thailand will probably always have P4P because it's very Thai and it is a huge industry that employs millions who are almost uneemployable. But things can and will change. It isn't AQ or Osama that's going to limit your fun in LOS. It's going to be the Thais themselves.
Sad but true. There's going to be lot's of fun possible for the forseeable future but you have to get over the idea that it's going to stay the same.
