Actually I think there is a good opportunity in cattle especially if you use the gentics developed here in Australia mixing Japanese "Wagyu" or "Kobe" strains with normal Thai cattle.
But back to topic,, my investment is in Aquaculture and as we all know Thai people love seafood. In fact all Asia loves it. ( me too).

MelGibson : I happen to know an abbatoir operator in australia and also several larger cattle property owners. I also as a young tyke happened to be on the wrong end of the stimuli for artificial insemination collection, not a pretty or comforting position to be in.
I hope you are not growing those red things that were all the craze in australia some years ago, redclaw I think they were called.
I often thought about the possibility of farming cross bred cattle in thailand and even shipping weaners accross and raising them here.
Never really looked into it as I prseumed the shipping, handling and the limited beef markets here would prove over bearing.
Although I have found recently a product from beef that I am hooked on and this would be a big hit in australia and several other countries.

cocoroso - if your questions reflect the level of knowledge of your friend, then I would strongly suggest he take his $300,000 and invest them in a strong stock in the US stock market (AAPL comes to mind, he coulda made $36,000 since last night on that), and keep it for 5 years, then sell everything above the initial $300,000 and repeat.
...or, if he is hell-bent on investing in some night life property, to buy a *small* bar, with an investment he can afford to lose, to see what it takes, and learn the ropes.
While bars or clubs can be run profitably in Thailand (there's many examples) your friend should include in his budget calculations not just the initial purchase, construction and staffing, but also operating costs for 12-18 months. In other words, he should be prepared to operate 12-18 months at a loss, or neutral revenue point, before turning a profit - which would include all staffing and operating costs, as well as marketing and promotion. Yes, it makes for a larger initial budget, but it also protects him from losing his investment if he didn't tale low and slow season into account.
Otherwise, Mel Gibson is giving you some very valuable advice, as is DrLove...

My friend is very negative investing in stocks in America or any other countries because it has too much risk.
Regarding running a small bar is also a good idea and I already told him about having a small bar that costs him about less than $50,000 but he has not decided anything yet.
I think he will investigate necessary things a lot more.

Funny about the Hotel Thing.
A friend of mine who came to BKK while in the Marines during the early 80's said he stayed at this Hotel that was a left over from the Nam R&R days.
The Hotel was called the "R&R Hotel" and came with a girl. He said he would bang her, leave her in the hotel, and then go out to party and bring more girls back.

Does he think a bar in thailand would be less risky?
If he's looking at something as a hobby or speculative investment fine. But if it's cash he's scared to lose thailand isn't the healthiest of places.
