Actually, my dad did that back in the 1980s, at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. He invested in shares of a condom manufacturer, they shot up in price and he sold at the right point in time. We're not talking big fortunes, but he credited that one investment with making his and my mother's retirement years much more comfortable than it otherwise would have been.

I would suggest your friend is an idiot. Investments in any reasonable stock has seen fantastic gains for said investors ( including my Father who invested heavily in the Australia stock market some 15 years ago).

So most GoGo's are opened by a falang who wants to live out a dream. He blows out 200K in 6-18 months then moves back to the states and go's to work as a greeter at Wal-Mart.
Does anyone else speculate that most bars are opened as a venue to launder money ? Billions of dollars are exchanged every year in drugs and other illegal activities.
I doubt they walk into a bank with this bag of loot. What better way to turn baht to dollar....dollar to baht....rubels to euro.....euro to dollar...than a bar in a third world country like Thailand.
A bar in Thailand or Philippines is breakeven at best. For every Rainbow Bar or Eden Club that makes a proft there are hundreds that fail miseribly.
It's like watching the Seinfeld episode of Bahboo Bot and the Dream Cafe. You know the poor guy who owns the place is struggling and has no clue what he's doing, but you think you could turn the whole thing around for him.
