It's reasonable, but not superlative. My like re this place is : - Its one of only two authentic live jazz places in Bkk. (the other being Brown Sugar) My dislikes re this place are: - I didn't hear enough of (jazz) blues at the place. Happen to like the blues. - During an evening the variety of music played is very similar & somewhat monotonous. - The seating area is small . One's ears are literally blasted if one can't find a seat far enough from the band. - Drinks prices , particularly for spirits, are unusually high.

I've been to Brown Sugar several times , Its very close to Lumpini Park . Seating area is small . It has kind of mundane jazz . The times I've been there nothing really 'happened' in jazz-speak. If I wanted a somewhat sedate evening I'd go to Brown Sugar For a more raucous (though not very fulfilling ) evening, I'd go to Saxophone. There appears to be an absolute crying need for good New Orleans type jazz places in Bkk & other places in LOS. Few things beat a night of hearing live authentic blues and imbibing a few beers, after an hard evening's screwing.

I am not into New Orleans type jazz. I like Brasilian/Afro , Reggae etc etc and of course Miles Davis and John Coltrain. Apart from that I agree with some of your comments! When I have been to the Saxophone and the 'Bangkok Blues Band' are playing they have sounded pretty good to me ! I think Bangkok is probably being submerged under 'Techno' etc !

I like the Saxophone Pub! Brought my girl up from Pattaya, and we did 3 Bangkok jazz venues on successive nights this last Tues, Wed, & Thurs. None of the places featured New Orleans-style jazz. Brown Sugar (Sarasin Rd) across Lumpini Park, not far form Patpong. This was a small place with a small band: just guitar, bass, and drums. It had an intimate atmosphere which reminded me of the jazz cafes of Paris, except seating was not in the basement. I had the fried Pig's Knuckle with sauerkraut, which is what I miss most about Mom's cooking (besides the cheesecake). I thought their drinks were especially good: I had 4 zombies, and then felt like one. The band was sedate, I thought Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" was the highlight of the evening. Saxophone Pub (Victory Monument). If you went to Brown Sugar for atmosphere, you come to this place to listen to music. My fillet steak was OK, my girl had a tuna sandwich. Cocktail options were disappointing, so I sipped down several Jack Daniels. Two bands played, the first more traditional easy listening stuff, the second was more a jazz-rock fusion band. Enjoyed the first band closing with the classic "Tequila", using it's large brass accompaniment (trombone, 2 trumpets, 2 saxophones). The second band played a lot of Earth, Wind, & Fire, and Chuck Mangione ("Feels So Good" ). Nicely done. Fabb Italian Restaurant and Jazz Club (Ploenchit Rd), a few blocks from Le Meridien Hotel. The quality of the food and musicians was a notch higher at this upscale establishment. I had rack of lamb and a Caesar salad, my girl had a seafood salad and pasta. We also shared a bottle of French wine, and had espresso & tea after dinner. Total bill came to about 4500 baht. Band played easy listening favorites, and consisted of drums, stand-up bass, grand piano, with another musician alternating on sax, clarinet, and xylophone. A female singer provided some vocals. I enjoyed all three places for different reasons: Brown Sugar for intimate atmosphere, Saxophone Pub for listening, Fabb for fine dining experience.

C'mon Hermanalobo, I'd listen to you croaking, and I'd also like to see you lip sych some Brittany Spears! Otherwise- JMHO but Thaiafficianado knows his music, and please trust his observations are right on. This happy poster though has been spoiled with music, and most pub/bar/small club stuff he finds pedantic. Jazz though, thats someone elses playground.

Hiya, Been there a few times and had a good time. About the only thing I didn't like was that the music was a bit too loud for my taste, specially as I was there with a female Thai friend (not a BG and really just a friend) and it was kind of hard to talk. But the music was OK, but it does seem to depend on the night, my friend only goes there on the weekend. Maybe that's when the better bands are on. Certainly made a nice change from regular routine. Cheers, Tom
