Crept into the large HMV shop in Oxford street the other day. I was looking for the Ive Mendes and Da Lata CD's. On what they call the 'World Music' section there was a young South African bloke (guitarist) He told me that the CD's I wanted were not that good (Da Lata too African for an alleged Brasilian band) - HMV didn't have a listening facility so I crept along to Virgin who has. Well the South African guitarist was spot on ! I crept back to HMV and he told me he managed the World Music section and recommended a couple of CD's both compilations, one Brasilian one a complete mix African/Arabic etc etc. Ace ! He orders in stuff that nobody else thinks about. DJ SLACKEN (can you tell me the origin of that name?) What are your feelings on World Music ? Rap has been around since about 1981 which is a long time and with all this 'Pop Idol' Mega Pop and Hip Hop. (I'm sure one could write a rap song around that last sentence?) I find so-called 'World Music' a great source of new idea and creativity ? DJ, I have some seriously rude West Indian Reggae (circa 1969) almost porno-audic but the tunes are good, also very funny! Is this a style that would go down (sorry for the pun considering the style of music) well in LOS ? Cheers, Brother Wolf -man

"Rap has been around since about 1981 " Rapper's Delight by Sugar Hill Gang was released in '79 but the form is older still.

I believe the first "Rapp" song was by Shirley Ellis in the late sixties. "The Clapping Song" goes something like this "3 6 9 The Goose Drank Wine and the Monkey Chewed Tabacca on the Street Car Line", etc, etc, etc... Don't know exact year but who really gives a f*ck anyway... TC
