Went there for the first time back in Aug with young kids. We rent a car (Jazz) from Hertz at the airport. If you plan out your trip and have GPS, then it's more fun to rent a car there...unless you want to stick with the tour group.

We did:
1. Doi Suthep and the Zoo on the way back down (they have panda there.. we paid to take the monorail to see all the zoo then got off to see the panda and few other animals...you can not walk uphill alot with young kids)...could not make for Night Safari.
2. Maesa Elephant Camp...did the elephant ride and see the show after...the ride was scary b/c the elephant walk down the muddy hill... If you drive, then after the elephant camp, you should visit Mon Cham ( http://www.indigochiangmai.com/wordpress/?p=921
http://cm-eat.blogspot.com/2011/01/mon-cham.html ). I am high recommend to visit Mon Cham. If you want to go to Mon Cham just follow the road until you see a small English sign to tell you to turn right to go to Mon Cham.
3. Did go to see hot springs at Sankhampang. It's OK. Went there b/c it's the tourist list.
4. Mulberry paper and Umbrella Center. Went there b/c it's also on tourist list.
5. Went to the night market but could not find parking so went back to the hotel....look like all the other markets at Bangkok...so we did not come back the next night.

Wat Umang. Maybe take a picnic lunch there as its in a little forest. Its different than any temple in Thailand that I have visited as there is this section of tunnels with different shrines in them. Its hard to explain but I think kids and adults would both like it.

I don't know if they have this, but I rode a bike up to Doi Suthep, which was not a difficult ride, but the coastind down was fantastic. I bet someone organizes such a trip, the downhill part. Kids would die for that.

On Sundays: walking street
On any evening: shopping and food area in front of University
Daytime: there are so many beautiful temples. Go to visit them. Each has its own charm and history.
Night time: flower and fruit market (and if you're into vegetables, there's also a vegetable market )
Very touristy, but give it a try: a traditional northern dinner. Sitting on the floor and using your fingers.
Handycraft: Baan Tawai @ Hang Dong

The address of the woodworking place is 9,Kaew Hang Dong. Hard to translate but it's called the 1000 house at 100. Really worth a stop. It will be on your side of the road as you head west out of Hang Dong. Right outside of Hang Dong. I am in awe every time I stop there.

Just as a follow up, we had a great time, here are the main things we did...

Doi Suthep, (using the covered tram, not a cable car that I never saw!) then up further to the Royal Gardens, nice.

Went to see Lin Ping and his family at the zoo, pretty terrible really, the enclosures are very small, kids loved it but I felt pity on the pandas. Also whilst at the zoo the kids did a 200m zip line which they loved, 120 baht I think, dead cheap.

We ate at The River Market, nice view of the iron bridge, food was good, touristy prices, but still reasonable, and a good happy hour.

Went to the nearby hot springs, bathed in the mineral swimming pool, boiled eggs in the springs, it was okay, the water was shooting up as you'd expect, but it seemed to be doing that because of some kind of nozel rather than naturally !! How Thai !

Tried to visit a cowboy ranch with various activities but when we turned up it was in a state of refurbishment, restaurant was open but all activities closed down.

Visited an umbrella factory, interesting.

Went to Doi Inthanon, well worth the visit, a reasonable 1.5hrs in a car traveling around 120km/hr. We went to the peak which was disappointing as there were no view points, just various signs to take your picture next to and a memorial for a previous king I think. But less than a 2 minute drive back down and you hit an amazing site, 2 huge pagodas (not sure if they were the royal pagodas), some truly amazing views and lovely kept flower gardens, back towards the base was a great waterfall, but a little too strong for swimming in.

The Night Bazar was like any other touristy market with the usual rubbish.

The Night Safari was a zoo in the dark, but don't worry they shine bright lights on all the animals as they try to rest so you can see them, again this felt wrong, but kids loved it. They had a very good water/sound/light show that we all enjoyed and a ridiculous cabaret that should be discontinued immediately, hideous ladyboys in feathers and what not, total trash. But worth the evening for the kids, and water show.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn on the river, HIGHLY recommend, extremely good value for money and kids eat and stay free ! SaucyTim had the best ever rate on this place. I also used their private car and driver for my entire stay, again excellent value and ended up costing less than hiring the car myself.

Weather, well surprisingly I felt it was the same as Bangkok, hot, around 31 degrees mostly. Yes cooler on Doi Suthep a little, and yes only 8 degrees on Doi Inthanon which was very pleasant in the bright sun, but otherwise Chiangmai felt the same as Bangkok.

P4P...no idea, not my thing any more, but the car did go down some area at one point where there were Beer Bars and farrang everywhere and honestly, the girls I spotted from the car were frightful !

Nice one off family trip, I felt we got enough out of it to make it enjoyable, but can't see me going back again any time soon, it felt like a been there done that moment.

Used AirAsia out of Don Muang, both flights were delayed by over 2hrs, but in each case an SMS was received the prior day, so not too bad.

Parking at DM is a nightmare, signage is crap, and then the walk to the terminal from the car park is 500+ meters, with a mix of in and outdoor routes ! But it was surprisingly free of charge even for the 5 days I left my car there.

I took my Work Permit with me to CM, expecting the dual pricing, and yes, it was at EVERY place we visited, but in every case the WP got me local price without any issue, all apart from the Royal Gardens above Doi Suthep, the lady refused but I think that cost me 50B instead of 30B so it really wasn't any issue. Another nicety at this place, you can rent a golf buggy with driver who takes you round and does a tour guide thing, 50 minutes for 350 baht I recall, excellent value and a rest for the legs.

Enjoy.

... Flight of the Gibbon... a little better than an hour drive out of Chiang Mai... zip-lines suspended high in the jungle canopy... about 2-1/2 hours without coming down, except for a short 10 minute hike up a trail to get to the top of a ridge featuring a super long cable... maybe 300m... you can't even see the end of it... what a scream!

... the jungle is thick and lush... very steep mountain terrain at pretty good elevation... the trees are absolute majestic towers, where you are 30, even 40 meters up... some zip-lines traverse between ridges, where you are at one point maybe 50, or 60 meters up... the platforms have no handrails, just safety lines... not for sissies, cry-babies, acrophobics.

... the package includes transportation from your hotel, zip-lining, equipment, lunch... left the hotel at 0700, back at 1300... foreigners about THB 3,000... residents about THB 2,300... there must be some sort of age/size limit, but my 8-year old was allowed, no problem.

... senior management is foreign... the COO, who conducted casual customer debriefings at lunch, is a Kiwi, I believe... Thai guides are well-trained, very personable, 100% English proficient and absolutely obsessed with safety (a refreshing change for Thailand)... the company's obvious emphasis on the qualty of the staff in apparent... at no time (ever) are you not clipped to a safety line... even the guides... well done and well worth it.

... a highlight experience for my kids... and me... highly recommended.

... they've also locations in Chonburi, and I believe in Krabi.

... bring camera!
