If you had to make a decision, I would suggest book 2-3 nights at KC Grande, seaview building, and use the next 1-2 days to look at the other accommodations.
You can rent a car at White Sand Beach (well, anywhere, really) for 800-1,000 Baht a day, which I strongly recommend over a motocy. Use the vehicle to check out the other beaches and 3-4 other hotels. Every hotel will be more than glad to show you their rooms and their grounds, and give you a tour.
Koh Chang is my favorite destination - feel free to ask anything else.

Many Thanks to both of you ! My lady companion, is the first time visitor in Thailand. We shall be coming straight from Beijing to Bangkok,might stay 3 days in BKK and then proceed to Koh Chang or coming straight to Koh Chang and then come and stay in Bkk. Now for BKK I know everything. For Koh Chang, we prefer a hotel good clean room, a large bath tub, private pool or jacuzzi will be an added bonus, spa & massage. Beach should not be too far, must be walking distance at night and we prefer little privacy as well. Renting car is always back of my mind. Only hick up is I am driving left hand drive car for last 25 yrs and there it will be right hand, but if it is an automatic car, it is not a problem. Otherwise, we shall have take driver and a car both. Please send your comment.

Staying in BKK for the first few nights is smart - it let's you make all the arrangements and plans for Koh Chang. I'd suggest staying at the Anantara hotel - great place.
Check with SaucyTim to help you with accommodations.
If you want to go directly, bear in mind that Bangkok Airways is your only air connection, and they have two flights per day. Book your arrival flight accordingly, to give you at least a 90 minute to 2 hour window after your arrival (compensating for delays).
I've adjusted to 'wrong side / driving & steering without too much of a problem. The key is to be attentive when you turn into driveways, and when turning. As long as you have a passenger / navigator to remind you frequently, it should be no problem

DD, okay here is my 2 cents comment. Anantara hotel is wonderful. Please comment on Jasmine executive apartment on soi 23 sukhumvit or Jasmine resort at door step of BTS Pra khanong stn. Only reason for staying on soi 23 was Bar hopping with my companion,that's all. If I stay at Anantara, I can come by taxi as well to this area. But I will check with Saucy Tim before hand, thanks. I don't want to go by flight, first of all it is expensive, secondly, VIP LUXURY bus is very comfortable to reach straight to Koh chang.
I think, I will be able to manage with right hand driving. It just need little time to adjust. Do I need any guide for driving in koh chang ? Or, it is okay? KC Grande resorts and spa - has any massage facilities ? Sauna room?

My solution is easy - I keep a 500 Baht bill inside of my passport.
When asked what it is for - "for departure taxes at airport, so I don't forget"
The one time I was stopped, handed over the passport, received the passport back along with a smile and a salute, and was waved on. I didn't even care what I was stopped for.
There are no police checks on Koh Chang, though.
