Family orientated stuff only please ! Based on 2 young kids + parents.

I'm pulling my hair out with Google as all it seems to want me to do is white water rafting and elephant trekking, and as for expat blogs they seem to be retiree's focusing on getting the most westernised food for the least amount of Baht.

Come on, seriously, a family with cash, what enjoyable/ historic/fun activities are there to do...?

I have these pencilled in already...

Doi Suthep
Doi Inthanon - although if it really is a 3hr drive each way I will ditch this.
Tiger kingdom - http://www.tigerkingdom.com/Home.htm
The River Market - for dinner one evening http://www.therivermarket.com/

Looking for people who have been and done, or live and do in Chiangmai...thanks guys.

Well night markets sell a lot of stuff family will buy.

By day you can have countless tours.

Personally, I would head to the lake and relax...try fishing.

There is a famous temple over looking the city high up on a mountain side.

There is movies at the mall, bowling too.

But heading out on a tour might please the kids, if it's an elephant ride one or hillside tribes.

I lived there for a couple of months in 2007 and hired a motor bike to get around, but some tours are cheap..

Enjoy

There's the Chiang Mai Zoo and the X-Centre.

http://www.chiangmai-xcentre.com/chiangmai_fun_for_children.htm

Chiang Mai Zoo - Chiang Mai Zoo has some good exhibits, lots of exotics animals, (more than 7,000 animals in fact), 5,000 individual birds and don't forget the fish and the reptiles. There's a fun Seal Exhibit, an enormous aviary you can walk through, and an excellent children's zoo, where your kids can ride ponies, play on climbing frames, play with rabbits and even see an animal show. Chiang Mai Zoo is also famous for the pair of pandas that were given to it by the government of China. Popular with Thais and westerners, it's only 100 baht (around $2.70) for adult admission and 50 baht ($1.35) for kids.

Don't know the kids age but there is flight of the gibbon. There is also a elephant like camp for the rescued ones. For the tigers go first thing in the morning.
Cheers and enjoy. K

On your way to Inthanon right outside of Chomthong there is a nice waterfall where you can have lunch and relax. Good place for kids to play.
And I'm sorry as I can't recall name(hopefully someone can) but not too far outside Hangdong is one of the coolest woodworking shops I have ever been to. Even kids will be in awe. Everything is a work of art.

There is the night safari.

4x4 tour into the mountains, and hill tribes, with lunch next to a medium sized stream, and includes elephant ride if you want.

Tour to Chiang Rai, seeing the Long Neck tribe, crossing the Mekong to an island in Laos(you can buy snake whisky), on a long tailed boat circling the Golden Triangle, going to the border with Myanmar, then a stop at the Opium musium on the way back. Also includes lunch overlooking the Mekong. Long drive, but worth it.

Waterfall tour, with swimming if you want.

Flight of the Gibbons, which is real expensive, but does have zip lines, and a canopy walkway.

Depending how old the kids are, renting motorbikes, and going over to Pai for the day.

Everything can be booked the day before so don't make advance reservations before you get there as you will pay more booking tours online.

If you have older boys, rent them a big tit hooker for the night. Hell, rent one for the wife, and yourself too.

Don't try going to the golden triangle and back in one day unless you like mini van travel a lot.

What I did was do the elephant track thing and take a stop over at golden triangle....I don't recommend Mai sai border with burma...

But I do recommend the boat ride across to Laos.(..I went through Chang Kong....Thai side)

The trip is brief a few minutes...visa takes a few minutes on entry.

The hotels immediately on the river street are 2 or 3 star at best...but nice views...

Buti basically there is a lot to do and see in that region.

... sorry to disagree, Koolbreeze, but unless a person is accustomed to driving a bike in an anarchic no rules knot of raving lunatics, I'd not suggest renting motorcycles... much less for their kids... snd CERTAINLY not kids on the BACK of parents motorcycles.

... the truck that broadsides so many in Thailand comes at you out of nowhere... the guys following you might not even see your brake light come on.

... lots of other non-life-threatening stuff to do, though.
