Seriously...the past couple of years has really destroyed Thailands beaches. There are much better options elsewhere. Too much tourism and a lack of conservation is responsible for Thailands beaches being so bad and the water lacking its once clean and blue appearance.

VIETNAMESE GIRLS: I find the vietnamese girls prettier than Thai or Cambodia. Generally, lighter skin tone, and somewhat less pronounced facial features. I was always good to go for instant sexual gratification but had alot of fun meeting "nice" girls, working as waitresses, or receptionists, etc., going to dinner with them and getting to know them. The "nice" girls in VN just seemed more receptive to meeting westerners that in Thailand or Cambodia. BUT none of them would put out. I got the sense they eventually would have once it got past the first 2 or 3 dates. This part of VN I liked.
SOOOoooo true...Vietnmese girls are extremely stunning. I've been to every country in SE Asia now and oh wow they are a sight to see! As you say, unlike Thai or Cambodian girls the VN girls are much much more receptive to Western guys. Thai girls see westerners as walking money bags (nothing else no matter what they say!), Cambodian girls are very timid and prefer to stick with Cambodian men but Vietnamese women seem genuinely keen to meet and get to know western guys (and their English is excellent too!).

I am not Joking. I live in Vietnam for over 20 years. I have been to all the major beach towns from South to North includes Vung Tao, Mui-Ne, Pham Thiet, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ha Long. None of the beaches have crystal clear water and sugar white sand.
In Thailand, you will find white sand beaches and crystal clear water in PP island, Krabi and Samui. You won't find that in Vietnam. If you know any hidden beach better than Thai, please let me know. I would like to check it out.
One thing I agreed with you, Thai beaches are too much tourism, that is why I alway avoid Phuket and Pattaya. Even PP island now only one side has good beach, the other side fill with noisy long tail boat (My last visited to PP island was Dec-2003 and I miseed tsunami by 10 days in Dec-2004)

The beaches around the Halong Bay area are very nice and crystal clear water. Catba island etc... Also Phuo Quoc island (SWest Vietnam) has many idyllic beaches and crystal clear water that are yet untouched by tourism.
Was in Phi Phi a month ago and Tonsai beach was crowded with long tails...very dsgusting. Petrol in the sea and when I took a swim I got a diper (nappy) float into my face along with some bits of carpet and plastic bags. The other side of Phi Phi was lodalum beach and that was a nasty beach too. The water was not clean and in the afternoon the tide took all the water out of the bay leaving a muddy beach with rubbish/garbage all over it.
7 years of visiting Thailands beaches and seeing them slowly degenerate each year is heart breaking. Dont even get me started on Patong and Samui. Suffice it to say I have now given up on the beaches of Thailand.

I have been to cat ba in 2005, too busy to check out the local girls after a full day crusing on Ha Long bay. I Saw one beach in early morning that fill with local, hard to tell the water without good sun llight. Never visit Phu Quoc before, may check it out this winter. With the new direct flight, it help. Few years ago, it took two days to get there (bus + boat).
I agreed Thai beaches are degenerated each year. My first trip to PP in 1996, back then Ao Ton Sai was fill with small colorful fish and crystal clear water, 5 years later Ton Sai fill with tour boats and trashs. Stay there for few days and enjoy Ao Loh Dalam and Maya bay alot. Return again in 2003 still good. I like PP and Krabi not only good beaches, I also enjoy watching topless europen girls sunbathing during the days and night life at night. (Now back to the real topic). although Vietnam have no shortage of girls, but if you don't speak Vietnamese, it can be hard to find (except Saigon). Another problem I have with Vietnamese girls, they alwasy want more tips but failed to provide good services. I only go to body message in thailand, I always get good services. Never try go go girls, do not know the services.
My experience with Vietnamese girl is make friends with them first, then take them out of town for few days then they will treat you like boyfriends. Most of the girls never go anywhere outside their home town.

Have made 6 trips to Hanoi throughout the Summer and the best extra curricular I have managed is a hotel massage with a happy ending. Did get a few offers from the crones on the back of motorbikes, but they looked incredibly rough, even in the dark, so I declined.
Just finished my first visit to HCMC on business and my impression of Vietnam has changed completely. Within 4 hours of landing in HCMC I was shagging the arse off a very attractive 20 year old.
Did a bit of planning beforehand from the forum and had the name of a few bars and massage parlours. As luck would have it my hotel was within 5 minutes walk of Hai Ba Trung Road. Checked in the hotel early evening and by 10pm I was walking the strip. Started off at the east end in a bar with a Vietnamese name that I can’t remember. Guy outside with the usual “You want lady bar – beautiful ladies etc.” Went inside to find a fairly small bar with about 10-12 girls and two other western guys, one playing pool, one exploring the goods in the corner. I sat down at the bar and was joined by a pleasant little thing with a very cute face and petite frame. Started talking to her and soon bought her a drink. I suggested we move into one of the dark corners so I could investigate what was on offer and she readily agreed. No sooner had we got settled than this mouthy friend of hers came over and joined us. I was a bit pissed off with this and gave her very strong hints that I wanted to be alone with the first girl – even told her I’d buy her a drink if she would bugger off. In the end I had had enough and called for the bill. At this the mouthy girl got all huffy and stormed off - too late by then though, as I had already decided to leave and I never turn back. Shame because from the mouth to mouth I had received from the cute girl it could have been a promising evening.
Went a couple of doors down to the "35" bar ( a lot of the bars on this road just have numbers - it seems to be their gimmick). Was met at the door by a bevy of beauties in sexy gear - mini skirks/hot pants etc. Went inside and the same format: bar stools a few tables and chairs and a pool table, but more brightly lit. Pleasant young (turned out to be 20 y.o.) cutie joined me at the bar and after a couple of beers we had done a deal on US$50 for short time, plus $20 for the bar and $20 for the hotel. None of the regular hotels seem to allow guests so you have to resort to the short time equivalents.
The exit routine was a bit strange. After paying the drinks bill in Vietnam Dong, I then had to pay the barfine in US$. They called a taxi and I was ushered in first. Only when I was inside the cab did the girl leave the bar and join me after much checking up and down the street by the bouncer. Got her back to the hotel and had a good time, although her cell phone went off in the middle which pissed me off a bit.
Next night I thought I would try something different so I went to the "Level 23" club at the top of the Sheraton. Supposed to be good for working girls, but I was there from 10-11.30pm and most of the clientelle was Hi So Vietnamese mixed groups and what looked like American Vietnamese (speaking English loudly). Saw a couple of freelancers, but they looked well past their sell by date. Did get talking to a pleasant lady sitting next to me, but I think she was only interested in getting me off with her friend, who was not so pleasant and had no English. Didn't look like things were going to improve so I headed off for the strip again.
This time went in the "49" bar. This one was a bit more cosy and had a private pool room at the back that was more intimate (see earlier reports on this thread). Same routine, and this time another 20 year old, but this one was a real spinner (she told me later 39kg) took care of me. Anyway, she was a good find. Took her back to the hotel and she went like a jungle bunny. Terrific BBBJ to begin with and then she was all over me- cowgirl, dragged me into missionary then a rapid dogstyle finish. Turns out she had an American boyfriend for two years (picked her up in the restaurant where she was working apparently) who had obviously trained her well before dumping her. That also explained her good English. In fact most of the girls I talked to had much better English than the Thai bar girls.
As I was only there for 3 nights I didn't want to push my luck so the last night I went back to the same bar and took the same girl, only this time it was even better. Stayed in the short time hotel with her until about 2am talking and drinking (and shagging of course).
One thing she told me, among much else, was that two of the bars on Hai Ba Trung ("51" and "81") are what she called "mafia" bars where the bills are loaded and the staff get violent if the customer refuses to pay - much like some upstairs bars in Patpong. Can't verify this, but on my last night when I approached "49" from the west side I was almost dragged into "51" next door by the mamsan and a rough looking young guy. Had to be really firm to keep going. So caveat emptor!
Each of the last two nights I also went in search of a massage after work. Found a place just down from the Sheraton (Tops?) with 75min body massage for US$10. Wasn't sure what part of my body they would be massaging for that, but when the girl made me keep my briefs on I realised it was going to be straight. Anyway, it was a good massage; not quite Thai traditional, but certainly in the "no pain, no gain" category.
Can't wait to return.

Time to learn the Vietnamese saying " Maak quar" TOO EXPENSIVE.
ST should be US$20, NO BARFINE and US10 for the hotel.

Coldest Vietnam in 40 years, snow in the towns

Ice and snow cover the Hoang Lien Son Mountain and even Sa Pa town in northern Lao Cai province of Vietnam, with outdoor temperatures around 3 degrees below zero (Celsius), local media reported.
News agencies said it was the most severe frost on Hoang Lien Son Mountain in at least 40 years - and the longest cold snap ever recorded in Vietnam.
The reports are complete with photos of snow-covered trees and brush in the northern province.
The severe and chilling cold spell has killed nearly 1,000 cows and buffalo in the province, reports said.
The record month-long cold has killed several thousand cattle across the northern provinces near southern China, particularly in highland areas, with 2,000 animals frozen in Ha Giang, nearly 1,500 in Son La and 1,000 in Lang Son, said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat.
The ministry’s cultivaion department director Nguyen Tri Ngoc reported that the cold had devastated more than 53,000 ha of rice and 5,000 ha of grain in 16 provinces, including Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Phu Tho, Hung Yen, Ha Nam and Haiphong City.
Mr Ngoc attributed much of the heavy losses to farmers’ negligence of the cold and the ministry’s warnings.
The record 30-day cold spell started on January 14. The previous longest cold spells lasted for 26 days in 1968 and 28 days in 1989.

Reading, it's cheap to travel via bus or van from PP to Vietnam. What are the visa requirements for a U.S. Citizen? Can you just show-up and pay the entry fee (passport valid for 6 months, 2 photos and $$$).
