The Railway Man tells the extraordinary and epic true story of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II. Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past.
The Railway Man is a pretty interesting movie. I was embedded with the Far East Prisoners of War organization last year for 6 days, as the 5 that had worked on, and built the Death railway, the bridge on the river Kwai, and hell fire pass, toured for the first time the area they worked at, and lived as prisoners 70 years later, with not one of them having ever visited the area before. The youngest of the 5 was 93, and the oldest was 96, with 2 of them personally knowing Lomax from the prisoner camps.
They classed him a lot different than the movie portrays him, and said he was actually a trouble making radical, who's defiant actions risked the lives of a number of prisoners.
My photos of the 5 of them riding the train for the first time (they never got to ride the train when they were building it during the war), them at the bridge, and them in hell fire pass, were used at the London premiere of the film.
