I'm as addicted as the rest of you, no question about that. After the first few days being back to work helps me to fight the addiction. I keep thinking that if I dont keep doing what i'm doing here, then one day there may not be a LOS for me to go to. I hate to work so I settled into something I like to do anyway. I think you are right there Pure Meat.No point sacrificing your whole life for the Thai experience.Who knows you may well take a completely different view of things if you have to live as an ex pat on a meagre wage.
Further you need to save for retirement in your own country which means making a decent salary with provision for old age.

To draw a way forward I could do that, for me it meant a package of next decade earnings in a highly paid western job.
Having a strong bank balance that would support me many many years on its own.
The initial investments I also would need like condo and business interests and some investments back here.
I came up with a figure of $600,000 dollars
At a retirement age in 7 years of 58 ( I am now 50 almost 51)
The rational goes like this I have $600,000 saved.
And a further $50,000 for initial living costs in establishing a small business there.
$600,000 in interest in an Australian bank will earn you
$37,000 plus a year
This represents an income of about $3000 a month and a little extra for health insurance.
The 85,000 to 90,000 baht a month will provide a decent living standard even in a few years time.
I sat down and considered that such an amount in Australian retirement would be ok....but in Thailand a much happier outcome.
The bottom line is its all about outcomes.
The most horrific outcome would be leaving Thailand after failure in retirement and facing the end in the west.
So I choose to work hard to make the balance for me right.
But I envy those that are living the dream now successfully
