Yup, I can confirm that too. I used to have Wells Fargo ATM card and I never had problems withdrawing from the local ATMs.

I have found using TC is the best way to go. I get them free, they only cost 33 baht to cash and you get a slightly better exchange rate than cash. You can cash them at all banks and exchange booths. When using ATM the Thai bank will charge you 150 baht plus what ever transaction fee your bank is going to charge (usually $5.00 US). Additionally you have the protection for lost or stolen TC. If cash is stolen your out of luck. I've been using them for years no problems in LOS. I would not get TC's in less than $500 US denominations.

Yup Cal. Only way to go if you're getting them for free. They work great in Thailand. They're kinda tough to cash in Cambodia, Laos, and Indonesia though. Went to about 6 banks in SGN I was referred to and it was a no-go. A gold shop cashed 'em after taking a big bite. wj

I agree with most of the posters.

Before I came here, I called my CC and told them that I will be on my way to Thai....then what??? They blocked my CC for the first 2-3 times when I used here...After called them 2-3 times to confirm that I was here, then no issues after that.

You should bring only one CC for backup. Hotel will need your CC to put a hold on your room. My CC charges 5% for overseas use.

I see that TC has better exchange rate than cash..but I never exchange TC here so I can not comment on what problems you may get...but others already warned you.

For exchange your money, the banks give you lower exchange rate than those independent boots.

Some banks or their exchange boots ask for your ID...so you will need your passport or your States driver license.

You can always ask your family to wire money for you thru Western Union...They are everywhere...but their exchange rate is either the same as the banks or lower...of course wire fee on top of that.

Before I leave I send myself an email with the account # and the none 800 #. The various companies have a phone # you can call from overseas and reverse the charges. I change one # on each card so if my email is hacked the account # won't work. I call each company and let them know when I'll be in Thailand. I place a temporary charge limit on my cards. When I use the debit card, I only use a machine attached to a bank. I had one machine suck up my card and didn't give it back. Went into the bank and had my card back in a couple of minutes. I don't carry my cards with me at night.

I have never had a problem with ATMs or Credit Cards in Bangkok.

I use my Visa at most of the major stores and restaurants and I notice that they are allowing me to choose THB or SGD for the billing currency. In my case I always choose THB as the rate I get through DBS Bank is better than the rate I get from VISA.

I also notice that the Bank that uses the red ATMs are now posting a proposed exchange rate before you withdraw money from their ATM if you are using an overseas account...

Are ATM machines safe in BKK?

You never know for certain so it is best to carry condoms just in case.

EPC, good advice, but I find when I put the condom on my ATM card it doesn't work in the machine as well....

I have been going to Thailand for over 7 years, have been living on and off there for over 4 years.

Out of all of this time I once had my CC # hacked and the bank told me it was actually swiped in Angeles City, PI. I had the card with me and it had only been used at places I trusted.

The only time I ever had a problem with my ATM card was I just finished entering the amount to withdraw, I could hear the machine counting the bills, the power went out for about 5 seconds (all over), when it came back on, it kicked my card back out, no receipt, and no money. When I checked my account later it deducted the 10K ฿ from my account. Good luck trying to go back and get that money right...

I have a Bangkok Bank Account now, and with that you can transfer money via RTN (routing transit number) because they have a branch in NYC. My US bank will transfer the money with out a fee and it arrives in that account 3-5 (usually 3 US banking days) days later... So I now avoid ATM fees in Thailand etc.

You can open it in one day at a major branch in BKK and you get your ATM / Debit card that day.

Yup, that's the best way to go. Open a bank account here and get a local ATM card, and save on all those foreign ATM card usage charges. Did that back 1996 when I first got here, and still using it.
