Last time I was in Bangkok (january 2006) I was quoted 500 Baht at the taxistand outside the airport (don muang) to Sukhumvit area. They would not let me take a cabride by meter. Is this still so?

Thanks for your knowledge guys! i'm happy because what you said seems to make sense to me from what ive gathered from this website. Also youve given some other good tips.
Its my first time in BKK so I understand that I wont get things at rock-bottom price, but by doing research here I can make sure that I have a f**king great time, hopefully not get ripped off, and most of all, stay safe.

PS Anchorage: Barrafish told me in in the talk room last night to make sure they turn on the meter when you get in the cab. dont know how up-to-date that is though.

You have to go to the taxi stand, which is past all the "set" pricing vehicles. Outside. You pay 50 baht surcharge for booking at stand but that still puts the trip at 300 baht or so. If you know the airport, go upstairs and grab a cab in the departures drop off area. You save the 50 baht fee and the drivers are happy they got a new fare right away. about 250 to suk

That's what I did. And still got quoted 500 Baht.
I had to pay 500 Baht to lady at the taxistand. I did not pay the driver anything and he paid the highwaytolls.

Anchorage- Your experience is why you need to always keep in mind this: nothing is set in stone in Thailand. Some days the taxi mafia's get a hair up their ass. And when they do- look out! They'll try to nail you no matter where you are.
Always think in terms of 'time for a plan-b', or a plan-c even, if the situation is really dire. If this happens to you again, here's a couple of plan-b options: head upstairs to the departures terminal and try to catch a cab that has just unloaded someone. But note: this works poorly at the domestic terminal. Why? Because 2/3's of your plane will follow suit- especially the Thai's!
Or, say to hell with it, waltz back inside and take one of the limo guys up on their 500 Bt limo into town offer. Or, you can also walk out to the roadway beyond the terminal pick-up / drop-off area and flag a taxi down. If you do that, ask him if he'll "bpay meter chai mai?" while you gesture to the meter, before you load up- the honest ones will nod right away.

You got screwed big time, and you did not go to the taxi stand. You most likely got intercepted by one of the touts pretending to be a legitimate taxi service, but instead screwing you over for twice the fee.

There's your indicator - at the legit taxistand, you pay the taxi driver at your destination, while at the rip off ones, you pay ahead. You did not go to the legitimate taxi stand, but were diverted.

Hey, I know I went to the legit taxistand. No one intercepted me. The same taxistand I have used on all my previous trips. The one on the right hand side after you exit the arrivals terminal. Maybe 20-30 meters away. Next time I'll set my foot down and accept no BS!

Anchorage, you did not get ripped off.
instead of taking a Taxi meter, you just took a sedan Limo driver. The ladies selling limo Rides at the Door to your Exit.
if that was the case, then 500 is cheap because the price is now 660 thb to Emporium.
I use these Limos sometimes when there is too much of a queue for the Regular cabs.
