There's something about those first few hours though. The anticipation that has built for weeks and months beforehand and you're finally there.....it's like Christmas again, but for male adults, the feeling is similar.
I can recall my last trip from the new airport to Sukh 33 vividly. Whilst taxi is perhaps the quickest method to get you to your final destination so the nightlife can begin, I recall feeling still like a prisoner in the confines of the taxi....nose pressed against the glass as I watched Thai humanity in all its glory, walking along the Petchaburi Road in the late afternoon sun, and how I so wanted to be out there amongst it.
Stuck at traffic lights (jeez, they must be the longest traffic light threads in the entire world!!) I watched in awe as people did their daily things....and this was my eleventh trip...I'd seen it all before!! But here I was, at long long last in BKK and only minutes away from being out there amongst it.....with a wallet full of notes depicting the dear King......though his promise to pay the bearer meant the baring of so much more....
I dunno, there's a feeling of awe and self importance, and that's before you've even heard the first 'where you go Mister?' Such is the effect of the place.
BKK is priceless in all its forms, but those first few minutes and hours post arrival (ahem!) certainly take some beating, here's to my next trip......4 months and counting....

Yes great 1st post Seasider.
It is only another 2 weeks until I head out to LOS again. This time I fly BA so there will be no Thai hostess to give me a wai as I step on the plane. And probably no fancy tricks with the toilet paper on the plane - they are more likely to run out on BA to remind you of the UK. It will be interesting to see what the first thing is this time that lets me know I have arrived.

After a grueling 21 hrs in various airplanes and airports, I touch down in Bangkok. Immigration, Duty Free, baggage and out to the taxi is a blur. Get to the Grottino around midnight and check in, after dropping off my bags, with no baht in my SIM I am off to the Family Mart for a top-up card. Afterwards, while on the street making my 1st phone call, there are 4 freelancers eating noodles at a table. One of them looks at me and yells out (in Thai) "tilac, no need to make a phone call, I am right here!".
Smiles all around...
That's when it hits me, I am finally back in LOS!!!

God there are so many of these and with 16 days to go I'm rehearsing them constantly...
...the big square temple thing you see when the plane captures the ILS into Don Muang (sadly gone)
...the golf course twixt runways (always cracked me up)
...the little blast of tropical heat twixt plane and airbridge
...the singing "prot sap"from the airport announcer lady
...trying to make the immigration lady smile (a favourite sport of mine)
...taxi mafia
...the funny elephant tower block on the way into town
...the soi dog
...pavements that would see my local council shut down for malpractice
...millions of thai people going about their daily lives and not noticing that I'm back
...the BG bush telegraph announcing that I'm back - "Hi I not see you long time, when you come Bangkok?" Quelle coincidence.
...the little refreshing drink at reception
...out the hotel door...done..made it...ready...
I now always hit the Beergarten first because there are just so many things I could do first that I'd spend all day choosing. Spoilt kid, sweet shop, Christmas etc. What I do hate is freshening up and stashing the valuables. Takes half a valuable hour when I'm here, now, ready, travelled for bleeding days. I need a hotel with a suitcase sized roomsafe so I can just ram it in and run.
It's been a year. The anticipation is agony.

From the minds archives...they say that your "home is where the heart is"....low season Pattaya.....first night back, late in the evening, just got to Walking Street, I'm tired but know what I want first to sleep well....I think it was Peppermint agogo but the beer ravaged memory is weak now. The place is almost empty of punters and in sleepy late night wind-down mode.
Three girls are sitting nearby talking to each other, I wave one over, she comes over expecting little this late into a slow night. My opening words: "I pay bar for you. How much for short-time?"
Ten minutes later we are holding hands in Walking Street strolling back to the hotel, in my other hand I am still holding the half-finished beer from the agogo.
As we walk along she squeezes my hand, puts her head against my shoulder and smiles up at me like I am truly the love of her life. The sex is soon to come but already I feel that I have got what I came for - I know I am back in LOS - I am where my heart always is - I am home. Enjoy.
