We all have our budgets, for the trip overall, or for the evening itself. My budget is in the neighborhood of yours, but will vary of course depending on how long I am staying, whether I spend more or less time with the "wife" or a few regulars, and so on.
Sometimes it is worth overpaying a little (Eden, a Thermae FL, a threesome), while sometimes much better value can be found in the low-rent places like Soi Six and Beer Bars for just as much fun. The point is not to worry too much about money, and to enjoy yourself. Money should be the invisible lubrication that makes the fantasy that is LOS possible, not the measure of its worth.
But, as this is a newbie thread on the lessons of LOS, let me add that to avoid the feeling the next day that you are the one that got f***ed last night you need to have a general sense of the prevailing market rates. Which takes time. And experience, to some extent, no matter how helpful this forum may be on the various indexes.
This last comment applies above all to the point that navigating the shoals of LOS is, of course, part science (economics) and part art (instinct, honed by experience). The trick is often knowing (sensing) when to loosen up on your purse strings and go with the flow, even if that means taking five girls out for an evening, or bailing on a single bar girl who has supposedly just promised you a fantastic LT for 1,000 baht, but whose attitude (you start to sense) is somewhat less than GFE. Neither situation is guaranteed to be worth it, no matter what the price tag. But one or both might be. The point is, the price tag doesn't necessarily tell you.
Making this determination is difficult for the newbie, which is why I advocate staying in the shallower waters in the beginning, to avoid too costly a mistake. But with time, you will learn that a great, great time can be had in LOS by not sticking too closely to your budget occasionally.

Valetta, the operative word in that sentence was "happily" drunk. I am rarely, if ever, "impaired" when I drink, merely happy and horny. So I agree with you, moderation is a good thing. (My use of the word "stagger" was not meant literally. I never stagger.)
