I did too, for years, even though by the time of my second trip I was an avid reader of FRs and other helpful threads on this forum. Seeing, recently, my newbie friends and bro make all the same mistakes, in one form or another, and taking note of the pitiful results of this thread, despite all of its excellent advice, however, I can't but help think there may be no avoiding making our own mistakes. There may, in fact, be no other way to really learn.
I was out sailing a 45 foot yacht recently and went aground. Embarrassing, for sure, but perhaps a necessary lesson, one not likely to be repeated soon. Thankfully no damage done, except perhaps to my ego.
Don't get me wrong, I think BK's new first-time section is an excellent idea. And I think one of the obvious next threads is going to be where do you go for your first p4p experience.
We no doubt have differing opinions on that topic, as most assuredly illustrated, again, by this thread. A BJ bar? A soapy? A go-go? Surely not Patpong, an Oily, or even Eden. A FL, even if from a club and not a parking lot, is not lightly advised, even if later, they can turn out to be some of the best options.
A friend of mine took his his first BF from a small bar on Soi 22, only to realize back in the room (?) that their mutual lack of p4p experience or even a shared language might just make things a little difficult. Let's just say he didn't lose his p4p virginity that night. I had offered him tons of useful advice, all of which he completely ignored. Because he needed to do it on his own. Fair enough.
Another friend picked up a girl at a go-go on his second night and stayed with her for a week. I could tell within minutes that she was a freak best returned after one night, or even one round, but he didn't believe me until she finally busted his nose and caused trouble at his hotel. But he needed to learn from his own mistakes.
I am certainly not saying we shouldn't offer newbies some good advice, especially on such mundane things as taxis, hotels, food, etc. And yes, p4p too. But let's just keep in mind, we may all need to run aground a few times, on our own, before we can learn how to sail the often shallow, rocky waters of p4p in LOS.

... and also how in many areas nothing much has changed from then to now -- at least going back 10-12 years which is my perspective. The famous nightlife spots like Soi 23, NEP and Patpong still remain largely the same save a few exits of some old bars. On the other hand, some entire complexes have vanished, like Clinton and the Beer & Massage hub on Soi 12.
Shredded is right, of course, there are older stories waiting to be told, 20 - 30 years, maybe older even. Nothing like a sepia tone to molly ourselves down with.
I am already enjoying putting together my first trip memories.

I have noted that many a FR filled with tales of woe begin with the words "having read the forum extensively, I arrived in thailand for my first trip...."
all the book learnin' in the world can go right out the window with the sensory overload that can make a first timers head swim.
I think many here will agree that the first time we came here, almost all the girls seemed like stunners, and that when a BG is massaging your crotch and is whispering what she will do to you when you BF her it can be hard to remember not to buy drinks for all her friends and the Mama, or to not bite at a over-market fee.

for the record my first p4p experience in thailand: darling!
never ventured back again, altho at times tempted to check it out again. none of the posts lately have encouraged me to, tho.
but at the time, it seemed like heaven. sitting in the bathtub rubbing up against the silky skin of a well-endowed doe-eyed brown beauty, I remember cursing myself for having wasted earlier trips just ogling naked girls at patpong!
however, the session afterwards was okay, nothing truly memorable. my newbie mistake was picking a hardcore wg who looked appetizing in the fishbowl (was smiling at me shamelessly, making me realize early on that the glass is never one-way, as always mentioned assuredly in touristy literature), but turned out to be a real nag for a big tip at the end. don't recall how much I paid her, but it was above what i'd been told was standard fare. that, the sulking papasan and the seedy dark corridors and rooms kind of put me off, it turns out permanently, as I was soon to discover many new and more pleasurable locations just a short walk away.
but it did get me hooked to bkk. good and proper!!

Poskat, you are absolutely right. The real thing is so overwhelming, so extraordinary, that no matter how much you study and prepare, you will still likely be a blubbering, hormonal idiot at the end of the night. Especially your first few trips.
Even now, I still experience moments where I feel like I know nothing, where everything is mystery and pure, unadulterated sexual bewilderment. Where my mind is rattled like a tin can behind newlyweds and my balls are left hanging in the wind like wet laundry. Such is the primal force of the p4p TG whirlpool.

I swear to you, some of us are so incapable of growing up and getting over that first-time feeling. After 30-40 odd trips in 12 years, everytime I arrive in LOS all girls still seem like stunners. And I spend quite a few hours ruing all that I have missed in those few months in between. Yeah, I don't wanna fall asleep, don't wanna miss a thing. And the departure terminal in Suvarnabhumi is my most disliked spot on earth, second only to the arrival terminal in my home city. Both places make me sick in the stomach.
When I look at the turmoil that is myself I am so full of awe and admiration for other men I see at departures who seem to me so fulfilled and happy when they are leaving BKK like they have had their fill. Why is it only me that is so restless, so unfulfilled, never satisfied, always hungering for more, greedy, hating "time to go" like the troubled kid hating school ? Newbies make mistakes, and learn. That's hardly a problem. The real problem is when LOS so grows on you that you cannot let go of it.
