wasn't sure where to post this but here will do.
Anybody know if there is a nice place to go and relax and get a nice view of Bangkok? Peferably a tall building in the centre...maybe with a cafe or restaurant (but not with sky high prices..) or anywhere really.

Baiyoke tower in pratunam, best to go just before sunset as you see the nightlife come into life.

State Tower at the west end of Silom has a good view. Drinks, food, jazz band up there.
Baiyoke Tower is the tallest. It has a buffet restaurant (800baht for foreigners) and entertainers such as clowns, magicians, mariachi bands, etc that wander around during dinner. Neato. On another floor is a sort of museum with binoculars to view the city with. On the top is a revolving platform from which to see more around and around.

I have posted this way way back but my favorite place to take the parents or friends visiting was "vertigo" on top of the Banyan Tree Hotel..
Its a pretty good restaurant but expensive....If you are just looking for a view and maybe take some pics its swank and easy to just buy a beer/wine and hang out...

One note about the State Tower, they have a strict dress code, no shorts and slippers. I had a trouble bring friends in because of that. And in both the State Tower and Vertigo, you can have drinks there to enjoy the view, though each drink works out to about 300 B each as with most 5 star hotels.

State Tower - no ripped clothing, no sandals, read up on their website first. http://www.thedomebkk.com, there are girls on the 1st floor that check for dress code.
Glass of wine for the TGF was 690 baht, cocktails about 300-400 baht.
