Hello guys,
I have a question, I went to thailand in late 2004 with a friend and loved it.
I'm thinking about coming back this xmas for 7-8 weeks.
Here's the potential issue.
I'm a 25 year old mixed race guy, would compare my skin colour to will smith, maybe slighty lighter tone.
Anyway on my first trip I went with my white friend, no problems all good.
LT prices between 1000-2500baht, with pattaya and the other islands always being cheaper than Bkk and Phuket.
When I came back it came to my attention, from what people told me and what I read, that thai girls favour lighter skinned guys.
Off course going with my white friend on the first trip, I couldn't see anything to suggest this, but there u go.
I wouldn't like to go back and be charged more, or not even be let in to some bars/clubs from the stories I have heard.
How would a trip like this be on my own, im always well presented, but could this be an issue, and would I be overcharged?

There might be some girls who don't want to go with you, but I don't think you will be charged more. It probably will help to be dressed a little nicer than average, which should be easier during the "cool" season around Christmas.

bootydaddy5 is mixed race (apparently part-black based on mention of Will Smith), and wants to know if he goes alone to various places in BKK without a white friend, will he will charged more than he would if he with a white friend, and/or will he be refused service in some places. The last time he was in BKK he was with a white friend and he is not sure if he was treated differently because of that (amount charged and/or ability to get service).
His question has nothing to do with being Thai or not being Thai.

BD5 I don't have a lot to help you out but here in Patty right now there are a considerable number of black guys that I dont see having a problem. Only positive discrimination I have personally witnessed is a bunch of Indian guys being turned away from Coyote bar.
Massage girls I have been talking to had more of a problem with big fat farang than color. One elephant seal of a guy was getting a foot massage and was sweating a lot the girl complained a lot and even went to the lenght of explaining to me in english about how fat and smelly he was.
Dont let it stop you go for it have a great time and let us know how you go.

bootydaddy, you may face some descrimination, depending upon the doorman. I don't believe there's a formal policy of exclusion at these bars, but some employees do have their personal prejudices. I've seen black customers at Long Gun, Suzy Wongs, and the Rainbow Bars, but not very often. Not sure how the girls feel, but they seem to like hip-hop.

QQ, not to ding on you even more but to clarify, some Soapies will put a "farang" surcharge on anyone that is not Asian (not just Thai), seen it happen at Emmanuelle, Hi Class, & Caesars. Seems that most soapies will accept anyone, just the price they pay differs. A favorite of mine used to work at CP2 then switched to Barons told me she loved Barons because she could refuse FS to any customer whereas at CP2 she had no choice and had to service whoever picked her out of the lineup.
GoGo bars have been detailed out above. Beergarden used to reject blacks (dont know if they do anymore). Not sure what the Oilys policies are.
Mr. Alan and ThaiAf are correct, it usually depends on the appearance/conduct of the black man and the mood of the bouncer. As always if rejected from an establishment, keep your cool, it's their loss anyway and why would you want to go in there afterall? Plenty of other places that would love to have your business.
BDaddy, one tip that can save you a lot of time is once you go into a GoGo bar, call the mamasan over and buy her a drink and chat her up. She will know which girls she can send your way (problem is that they probably won't be the stunners but mamasan is just doing her job).
Or you could go to Brazil, brothers do REALLY well there.

I agree with Mr Alan, that it is unlikely you will be charged more for being black. The rate is the same, black or white. Things that might change the going rate for you will be things like how well off you look (i.e. how much it looks like you can afford to pay).
Also, no doubt you are right that some Thai girls do not like black men. Don't worry about it as there will be those that have a thing about black men also. My guess is that for the most part the girls in the bars & clubs will be more interested in your wallet than your colour.

Thanks for the input.
Just to clarify i'm a light brown asian colour. Nowhere close to black, about the same colour as alot of the girls themselves lol, which makes it more ironic.
Some good input, I'm very aware of the farang surcharge, that is applyied by most soapies.
I do like my soapies however i'm more of a LT lover.
In 2004 when I went there was never a problem in cowboy. I also don't recall there ever being any bouncers????
I know it's only 4 years ago, but I spent a good bit of time in cowboy walking up & down, going into all the bars, the only thing I remember seeing was hordes of girls trying to entice us into to each bar.
When did bouncers get invovled in the p4p scene?
Anyway just to re-iterate, my concern only applies to the bar scene, as I have never been turned away from a bar, and when I come back to los, I don't want to be.
I can understand it happenning in maybe 1 out of 10 bars or so, but any higher odds than that, and I would have to reconsider my trip

That term is used VERY loosely. Sometimes there is a slick Thai dude hanging out in front and opens the curtain as you walk in (PlaySkool), or other times it is a large effeminate man (Suzy Wong). Most of the time if there is any hassling to be done, it is the hello girls that will tell you its "members only" before you get inside or a waitress may tell you once you sit down.
From how you describe yourself, you shouldnt have any problems. And there are white dudes that are darker than some Thais, it's more how you conduct yourself and you'll find that you will get into more places than not.

Black? Are you talking about race or color of your skin?
First, no one is actually "black." Blacks are brown (various shades from light to dark mocha), Browns are light brown or tan, and Whites are various colors, but not white (unless they are albinos). Also, Asians are not yellow, and American Indians are not red.
