Depends on your style. If you like the cowboy rustic look (recycled farm equiptment turned outdoor furniture), then Chiang Mai is the place. Good thing about this furniture is that the wood has already aged so it will look the same once it arrives in your country. Unfortunately, there is no top quality new garden furniture in LOS due to the lack of teak trees and quality of suppliers. The wood in Thailand (if they can get it) comes from Burma, some from Loas. Since the wood and labor cost are too high (compared to Indo) the suppliers will use a fraction and not kiln the wood in anyway. What you get is firewood once it arrives in your country. They might show you something in their showroom, but dont believe them. Teak must be processed correctly. I would suggest a wood reader to calculate the moisture in the wood. It should read not more then 15%. To date, I have met only one supplier in Chiang Mai that has a kiln. Unfortunately, he doesnt do outdoor furniture, only indoor. The name is Pan Shop furniture and they have a website.

I think the best thing to do is get over to Singapore for the international furniture show. Its the best in Asia and it runs March 1-5. If you cant make that, go to a place called Jepara, Indonesia. You'll stepback 300 years into a city of 1 million where all they do is furniture. You'll find 200 to 300 suppliers to choose from there. Many variations on cost and quality for you to choose from. Just remember to take the wood reader, ask to see their kiln and bargain. If you leave LOS in the morning youll be there by 7pm the same day. Stay at the Jepara Indah hotel and you'll have no problem. Prices will be 75-100% cheaper then in LOS. Better quality. Dont go on Fridays, everything is closed.

Another thing, doing business with Indo is irriatating, but they will not lie as much as the Thai business' in Chiang Mai. An order in Thailand typically takes 4-6 months as opposed to 4-6 weeks in Indo.

Generally stay away from Bali. There is little or no production there and the middlemen inflate their prices and dont care about quality. Jepara's manufacturers will stuff the container for you so you dont have to pay a packing company $2000 USD to do it for you.

It sounds like an easy thing to do, but if you ask anyone in the business of exporting furniture they will tell you it takes nearly 2 to 3 years to get a good container.

Cheers!

I have bought lots of teak furniture from Chiang Mai. Thai teak is better than Indonesian and Indian teak. Burmese is the best but hard to get them because of their crazy government. There is also a slight difference in looks between old teak and new teak. PM me if you want more info.

See guys now that's what this forum is supposed to be about, usefull information and the sharing of it.

Not defecation and the spreading of it!

My hat's off to a good question and excellent answers.

Although there is a difference of opinion on the quality of Thai Teak. But hopefully that will be addressed openly and honestly.

It may well be the grain of some variations of teak are better in Burma, but its hard for most to recognize.

Unfortunately, Manowar didnt address the issues about price and specifically kingfish's intent to purchase outdoor furniture. Price 50% to 100% less in Indo. To date, I have yet seen a serious supplier of outdoor furniture that can come close to Indo. Open any trade magazine, and it all comes from there.

Never been to Indonesia, and so really cannot contribute here reg. quality or price compared to Thai teak furnitures. I went to Chiang Mai to custom order outdoor teak furniture for my garden. They are about 25-30% costs of US retail for the same thing. But if Indonesian can make them cheaper, all power to them. I just love visiting Chiang Mai and Hang Dong is a "must see" for antique lovers. A brand new US$50million Mandarin Oriental hotel had just opened and the whole thing is in old Thai temple motif decorated with old Thai pieces and sculpture. Reportedly very expensive to stay. Had dinner there with one of my Hang Dong supplier. Beautiful place. Just happy about my purchase and my visit to Chaing Mai. BTW, the p4p scene there sucks !

Many thanks for your replies guys.Funny thing, they were all posted on Feb 18 the day I left for LOS.Saw lots of furniture, and agree with you that the North is the best for variety and value.

Never been to Indonesia, must be worth a look, will there be many communication issues or is English widely spoken?

Thanks again
