Gus
I have a hard skinned 10 year old Samsonite suitcase which is still as good as ever, it is pretty large and has the 3 number code lock, I am still reasonably happy with the case.

However, it has two wheels with the handle set into the end meaning you pull it along lengthways and it doesn't balance that well, especially on some of those rickety jettys on the Islands.

Samsonite do a Bright Lite 82cm which seems great, has a lock, 4 wheels and pull up centre handle, I think they call em spinners, not my idea of a spinner, but there you go.
To buy one of these cases in the UK is about £190=9500 thb, are genuine Samsonite cases available in Bangkok and do they work out any cheaper?
In the Bangkok upmarket shops I have found many items to be no cheaper than in the UK.
I know there are loads of baggage sellers on the Suk etc but I want a high quality suicase which will stand up to the rigours of aircraft handlers without a wheel coming off.

When I got stopped at LHR customs before Christmas I got a strop on with the customs guy and said,"What's up do you think that I have a little Thai girl in my suitcase"
TIA

Like you I make frequent trips from the UK to LOS.

I used to think could I buy things cheaper in LOS than in the UK.

But you are talking about a suitcase costing less than £200. You will spend thousands on your flight, hotel, food, drink and most likely female company, massage etc.... and you are worrying about, what.... maybe if you can get a case for a few pounds less in Bangkok.... !!!

Not worth the post. If you were talking about something costing a few thousand pounds... then maybe.

Buy your case in the UK and go and enjoy yourself - don't be such a schnorer !!

where are original ones made ?

if its in Asia then they might be cheaper here.

but if they are USA made than probably not, a big chain store in the UK would probably have a better price

I have many of the clamshell samsonites. they do take a beating and are cheap to buy at boot sales etc,

I leave 2 at my hotel full of stuff when I fly home so I do not have to drag the same stuff back and forth,

More room for gifts for the girls !

Your comments on where some products are made therefore make them cheaper in that area is not accurate. Many, if not most Toyotas are made in the US, and most US product named products are made in China and much cheasper in the US than in Asia, etc......

In fact, many products made in Asia (many in Thailand) arre ONLY sold in the US and EU and not even available in country where manufactured..

Not sure about luggage but very true about many products. In regards to luggage best to pay more in legit place in Thailand (Central et.al) and not on the streets.

P.S. Love to see the many Indians and/or Arabs (mostly) walking Sukhumvit hauling around luuggage on wheels. I think they repack every time they leave the hotel room and troll around. LOL........(no racist comments, not intended)

Gus, I also had been using the same olde hard skinned Samsonite suitcase for years. Three years ago the nite before an LOS trip whilst packing, I noticed all but one screw was missing from one of the hinges. No choice/time so off to a full mark up retailer for the latest hard skinned Samsonite suitcase (on sale for $7,500 baht). I was told by the sales clerk that the Samsonite suitcases have a life time warranty. Just send back to Samsonite on your baht and they will repair for free.

You used to be able to get these same Samsonite suitcase's at Costco for $3,300 baht.

If it's not actually manufactured in Thailand, then all luxury items have a 200% duty to import them into the country, so you'd be way better off buying in the UK

Samsonites are now made mostly made in India or China. The cheapest place to buy them is the USA or the duty free places like Singapore or Hong Kong.

Nah. Come to BKK, buy a Samsonite if you must and use it as a good excuse to get laid as often as possible!!
Seen the exchange rate with the pound at 47 baht. Buy the case somewhere else!

Thanks for all the useful input guys; and you too Romeland, maybe if we are on the same flight sometime you can send me a glass of champagne back to Economy from your Business Class seat.

I have often noted how you see many men from the sub-continent dragging a suitcase along the Suk rather than a 45kg TG.

I will keep searching Ebay and Amazon in my spare time but I will not be paying out £195 for a case, same as I won't be staying at the Peninsula again, I'd rather give it to a cute little thing in Shark.

LOL. So true, and if you look close, you'll see me right behind them, unable to pass.

Samsonites - those hard shell, what they used to call Oyster cases, can't be beat. They do last forever.

And somewhere in my stumbling round here, I thought I saw a luggage repair shop, but I'll be damned if I can remember where.
