Not that I don't believe you, but I would like to see the name and model number of an external DVD player (not for use in a computer) and sold in the US that is region free, as opposed to being able to change the region code a fixed number of times and with the manufacturer's firmware intact (which has not been hacked).

You were asking about Beautiful Boxer. I just bought the DVD in Hong Kong for equivalent of 500 baht. It has English subtitles. Also available on VCD. That probably doesn't help you, I know.

Agree with I'm on holiday. US model (spec) DVD players haven't had region code since 2000.
Cyborg - better ask the shop what the format is. If you buy a PAL format DVD of Beautiful Boxer - it will not play on your machines back home unless the DVD player has system converter built in.
Shop Amazon.com on-line & hop down to Best Buy to get them.

The Cyberhome CH DVD 500 is a player, costing between $35-$45, which is region-free, as well as able to provide excellent PAL/NTSC conversion - in addition to having component outputs.
Most name brand (i.e. SONY, etc...) players/recorders are still required to be locked to Region-1 - the only difference is that this region-lock is no longer as stringently enforced (most likely because the enforcing authority has realized how pointless it is). Even the locked players can be unlocked via remote control codes.

Dotcom, Are you sure it wont ?? My TV is a progressive scan HD TV. I do not hook up via the normal connections but rather the progressive scan connections....
Geez this gets so complex I think I will just buy the DVD and hope for the best...

I've sold many DVDs to people in the States. All of them PAL, nobody ever complained about incompatibility.
Just go for it.... Only a couple of hundred baht. Be sure to check if the DVD in Thailand has English subtitles.
The movie is worthwhile watching... not great, but OK.

IF you're on progressive scan, you'll be fine - and, just to gain perspective, you are dealing with a DVD costing $2.5 US, so I think you're not going to risk much just trying it out

I haven't seen BB as a 100 baht copy. Not a lot of Thai movies on the illegal market... maybe the pirates spare the Thai industry...

Nonsense.
Most Thai DVDs (especially the new ones) are around THB 200-300 or even higher. Some are for sale at THB 99 but usually the older ones (99999, Mekong River Party).
Beautiful Boxer is THB 199.
