I don't mind payin' a wee bit extra for the Thai branded apparel. Being of a slighter build than most farangs I find the clothes in the Thai shops much better in fit than farangland equivalents.

Ellehomme, Guess etc., are all okay for me as I can comfortably wear an "M" or even an "L" but I find it hard to get good fitting clothes from the same brands in farangland where it's hard even to find "S" size!

Cheers

ties & business shirts can be very cheap comparing to farangland, if discounted.

Options for branded stuff
- buying normal price for stuff not made here; rather questionable
- hit up the end of season sale periods; Guess for instance discount up to 70-80%; Club 21 recently had similar discounts on their inventory which was ordered in too great a quantity for their new stores at Erawan which opened late - BKNY, Armani exchange etc + their decent brands all on sale; both Guess and Club 21 held their sale events in temporary halls (Amarin and somewhere in the top of Central World for instance) ; you would be hard pressed to buy anywhere near these prices anywhere other than maybe HK or Singapore on sale. Some brands like Zegna discount heavily at end of season, and sometimes a big farang can find their size quite easily, since not many Thais need an XL or a 40 inch waist
- hit up the locally made licensees e.g. Lacoste is cheaper in Thailand than most other places straight off the bat, because it is made here under license and for some reason they can set their own pricing here
- certain models of shoe and so on are made here; from time to time you might see certain models being far cheaper than overseas even at regular price
- luxury brands imported from overseas is generally around 10% higher than HK or Singapore; government currently looking at the luxury tax issue to be able to acheive parity, I expect this to occur sometime in 2005 or 2006
- local brands are great, and a bit of a hidden secret in some ways - especially compared to the relatively conservative nature of a lot of the American big brands - but sizes may be too small and much of American fashion is quite different so for some people (e.g. the TH, Guess, FUBU, Tommy Bahama, Von Dutch brigades) this is not going to work when they get back home. However, think So Cal individual styles, and that is something like Thai fashion... actually some of the stuff is so crazy cheap especially compared to cruddy Armani exchange or BKNY or something that it really is worth looking at for something a bit special and different... sales usually end of season for Thai fashion around May and Dec then Jun/Jul and Jan for international luxury fashion. Best places for this are Gaysorn and Emporium - Gaysorn has a new fashion society store on 2nd floor near the greyhound cafe which is pretty decent and has some good range of some local designers.... Emporum dept store is not bad either
- stuff for export like Gap and even Levis can be bought in odd sizes via the samples sold at Export Shop and XL shop which are in many malls - these are the quantities often made to check quality or as part of a bid for work or for various other reasons - sometimes defective stuff.... this is essentially a factory outlet with very low prices; you can get a pair of levis irrigulars for as low as 200b which is what $6USD these days...
- fakes - why would you bother when you can get the real thing
- Jumpinjack; some luxury brands here really suck, but some are ok - there are plenty of quality originals here; let's take LV well they have a flagship store here so you pretty much have the whole range of what they stock so unless you live in a city or are going to a city with another LV flagship store, then you aren't going to see the same selection. And of course, brands like Guess and Tommy, well they are mass market brands, so they have to match their range of products with their audience; pressumably middle class of USA and middle classes of Thailand have quite different tastes... For shirts for instance, stripes are popular so if you go to Alfred Dunhill for a shirt then chances are it will have stripes. If you lived in LA or New York then I guess all the European luxury brands are probably there, but it would be far harder to find them in say Reno or Bishop, so then it makes sense to consider buying on holiday; right now I would say USA is probably almost on par with HK and Singapore, but traditionally USA is not considered to be super cheap, so prices might go up as the $ goes down. Pricing depends a lot on the structure of how the product gets here
- For watches right now is not a bad time to buy... hand made movement watches are in the middle of a price war where discounts of up to 40% are quite common... just walk between Hourglass, Cortina Watch and Pendulum in Erawan and Gaysorn and play them off against eachother...won't work for Rolex because they price control, but it will work for some of the others

In summary, I'd check out the export shop and XL shops for ultra cheap stuff in odd sizes; keep an eye out for advertised sales and avoid the copies. For business suits and so on, I just don't buy that you need luxury brands, handmade is super cheap here for suits and shirts.

Great post! Are you sure ur not a Fashion marketing teacher ? hehehe For Brand names fan, Club21's importing brands such as A/X, BKNY, Mambo, Maxmara, Diesel.... here, please be prepared to add around US$20 to $40 to the price of an item that you would pay back home. These brands in Thailand have never been on discount more than 40% even end of season sale. Exp, try a tour to A/X discount outlet at your home, you wouldn't want to buy full price again.

Strangely enough I am working in this industry, so I have to know a little bit NOt much though, I have concluded most people in the fashion industry are the most stupid non-business like people I have ever met. Especially some of the most famous brands.

I cannot wait to change jobs and do something more meaningful, like brake parts, or maybe waffle machines

For Club 21, they have been discounting up to 70% at their recent private sale events; well more than their instore; that is why they keep it relatively on the down low; offload the inventory without getting into the problems that Guess have with a never ending sale.

Most of these are advertised for only 1-2 days, and often are promoted word of mouth only. The last one was at the Amarin Plaza, and they definitely were discounting a LOT more than 40% of some items.

You're right about in store; most of the things you would want to wear are like 40-50% discount at these sorts of shindigs which aren't instore, and 70% is for the stuff you would give to your mother in law/wife/worst enemy etc. And yes, you would be rather unlikely to see more than 40% discount instore; although that said for the odd item you might.
