Hi,
I can only take 20kg bagge to bankok,
thinking of only taking little cloths and to go shopping in bkk.
how are the prices (convertet in euro/doller) for western labels (ralph lauren, hilfiger, benetton, nike etc.)
are there many designer shops or department stores
so please let me know, im am flying in some hours....

Take with you only what is strictly necessary, ie toothbrash, medicines etc....no clothes needed as you can find everything here at a very low price...
If you are into brands, you have 2 choices:
1. Shopping malls such as Central or The Mall where you can get original stuff starting at 900 baht up
2. Traditional night markets (Patpong or Sukhumvit) where you can get almost the same quality of the originals at less than 50% of the price or even lower (bargain!)
Or you can just adjust your style to the local one and go very easy with stuff for 200/250 baht up.....
If you are loded, then Emporium and Gysorn are waiting for you, if you are flying lower in terms of budget, the choice is limited only by your fantasy and taste!

also tailors are really cheap I have heared, so maybe I will buy one designer suite (hugo boss or sth) and the go to the tailor to make similar once

BE VERY CAREFUL with the tailors!!!
Too often they come out with a first offer, say 199US$ for a nice set (suite+shirt+other) and then at the end they charge you double or more because of the "additional work" required....and in same cases the stichings are so bad that after a couple of times you wear the suit, wops it falls apart!
So, ask some of the brothers some raccomandation and again, be careful...

The huge Pratunam Market surrounding the Indra Hotel has the largest selection of knock-off designer clothes at bargain prices - with excellent quality.
Take care with sizes as they appear to be Asian and usually require Westerners to get the next larger size, i.e. if you usually buy L you might need to try XL, etc. (Or am I just getting bigger?)

Actually many of the copies of main brands I find to be much inferior. For example,hilfiger manufactures here in Thailand but one cannot purchase originals here. I find the selection of some major brands to be far less here as compared to the states. As far as tailors that is a different story as one can get some reasonable deals.
Had to go to Hong Kong to buy some Hilfiger golf shirts that one cannot buy here in Thailand, common among major brands. Try buying a polo shirt without stripes in Thailand?

Yes, you do need to buy one size larger for most casual shirts compared to sizes sold in the West.
Most of the shirts sold on the streets are genuine, but they are old stock, overruns, etc, and not usually the latest styles. Shirts sell for about 250-300 baht each on the street, but are a little cheaper if you bargain and buy in quantity.
I have carefully examined some Nike golf shirts purchased on the BKK streets with some I purchased in the USA, and the buttons, labels, etc were genuine in the ones sold on the BKK streets (Nike uses buttons with their name on them, which would not be cost effective for a counterfeiter to duplicate). But the quality of Nike golf shirt is not really any better that no-name shirts anyway. As I said, do not expect the latest styles or the same styles sold in the West to be sold on the BKK streets at the cheap prices. BKK department stores may be different, but the prices will be higher.
If you can only bring 20kg to Thailand, how much can you take back?

If you are from the US, stay away from brand name retail stores in Thailand. Do not shop here, Buy them in your own country. They are a lot cheaper. you would find that Thailand charges a huge amount of import tax for import goods and are ridiculously expensive that makes you feel ripped off. Unless you plan to buy them off the street in BKK, that is. if you really need them here, gets the counterfit, save your money.

The sales, Do not be illuted about the end of season sales in BKK, they are cheesy discounts. Brand name goods discounted prices are equal suggested retail price selling abroad. unlike in the US or may be EU where the sales are a real good deal where 70% sale is a real 70% off, Plus they mark down taking off additional 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% it depends. how cool is that!!!
Though the importers and distributors in Thailand try to persuate the government to decrease import taxs to brand name goods due to the Bangkok fashion city campaign. but not yet applied.
