In support of bro' EPC, it could be somethin' t'do with the 'phone traffic on the respective lines! If you're callin' from a landline to a landline in Blighty durin' peak time then the rates will be higher than a call from a UK landline to a cell in Thailand when there aint a lota traffic in Thailand at the time.
P'raps some phreaker has a more believable explanation.

Edit: The companies that offer cheap international rates usually route their calls through low traffic lines.

The calls get re-routed via alternate numbers. A few times when I've used these services from the UK the people I've been calling have commented that the caller id on their phone shows the call as coming from a Thai number, prompting lots of angry 'Why you in Thailand and not tell me?' responses at the other end.

It is my understanding that the BGs have bought off the telecom giants to make the UK-Thailand rates much lower than the USA-Thailand rates. This is because guys in the UK are more likely to sponsor a BG. So by making the calling rates lower, they call more often, fall in love more often, and send more money - everyone wins.

Turely found the best calling card. I know quite a claim. Did a complete Search engine on this one. Nothing.
http://www.tollthai.com The card is called Fanchen 1 cent-3 minute rounding (3cents) and 99cents charge every two weeks.
One cent a minute to any phone/cell/land or north. My Thai lady has been in the US for 5 months now and spend only 10 to 20 dollars a month for 2000 minutes of calling.
Talk away fellas or keep those ladies from getting homesick without busting your budgit.

There have been reports of fraud use of credit card from Tollthai.com according to another website. Don't use them. It's too late for me however. I haven't seen any other charges on my credit card but the phone card SUCKS! I get connected and after 1 minute it gets disconnected. What a waste. I will try and dispute the charge. Tollthai.com doesn't want to give me a refund for their piece of shit card!

From the West Coast USA I use the 88 Asia card. For $5.00 US I get 200 minutes calling from my cell phone to a Thailand cell phone. That works out to 2.5 cents/minute. The quality is good, but not great.
No taxes, no "maintenance" fees. They DO round UP to the nearest minute.
One caveat is that you have to call a local access number to get 2.5 cents/minute deal, rather than the 800 number. But, since I use a cell phone, I can call ANY of their local numbers with no long distance charges to me. I preface my call with *67 (number blocking), so 88 Asia has no idea what my cell phone number is when I call (at least, to a non-800 number), so I believe one can call ANY local number from anywhere in the USA.
Another nice thing is that one of the local motels sells the 88 Asia card, so I don't have to give anyone my credit card details. I just hand them $5 and they give me a card.

(looking at their web site they seem to only sell the $20 USA card (which they discount to $19 USA). Says that for the $19 USA you get 777 minutes of calling to a Thailand mobile number.)

I'm not associated with this in any way. One of the Thai girls that came to my town to work during the summer turned me on to this card and said that all the Thai girls used it in the USA.

It's too expensive and the quality of service is sub-par. I ended up setting up my own voip system, and am paying between 5 cents and 9 cents to Thailand.

For the Aussie bro`s, Ive found that the Oasis card is not to bad, mobile to mobile / land line in Los is $ 30 aus = $ 25.44 usd for 825 min.
Keeps my Teerac happy to call home when she wants.
