One of the dangers of tipping in Thailand is that the cost of goods and services may eventually include them.
Case in point, I used to get my haircut for 150 baht and the first two times tipped the girl 50 baht, just because she made me look so unexpectedly studly.
Thereafter the price of my haircut became 200 baht -- no change ever comes back from two red banknotes.

In the UK it is the norm to tip 10% of the total bill, sometimes for exceptional service 15%.
I too am guilty of generously over-tipping in LOS, and i do look back & think that to overtip is detrimental & may cause service levels to decrease and expectations to increase, however it is difficult not to.
I remember when i was in Nana Plaza a young boy offered to clean my shoes, and i said how much, he held up 4 fingers, i said 400 bht? He said.....40bht...40bht! So i agreed expecting a quick clean in 2 minutes. After 20 minutes he was still cleaning them, even removing the laces and cleaning between the lace holes. It took him 35 minutes, and i have never seen such a good job. I then handed over a 100 bht note, and as he searched for my change i said no...no you keep it. He then wai'd me and humbly walked off.
I don't know why, but i felt so sorry for this young boy, working so hard, & i felt guilty and felt like giving him 500 bht.

At 35 minutes and 40 baht a pair the kid would make minimum daily wages in Bangkok on 7 shoes for just a shade over two hours work.
Presuming the kid goes whole hog and puts in an 8 hour day, he stands to make 560 a day. Even if he's still going to school and works just four hours a day, chances are he's outearning his old man.
Whatever, tipping 150% is just plain nuts. No wonder the Thais think we're morons if that is the sort of example we project. (Addy, not calling YOU a moron, just suggesting your action was out of scale to the service rendered.)
The last thing the Thai underclass needs is reinforcement of the magical fallacy that money somehow falls out of the sky.
Props to the boy for actually working; let's hope he wasn't coerced nor had his earnings taken away by a handler.

Hey, whatever floats your boat, Addy. I'm not going to give the big "don't drive up the prices for the rest of us" speech because it is not one that I believe in.
In fact, it can be pretty well demonstrated that the more big spenders there are in the p4p scene, the more the market grows overall, and being a pyramid shaped economy this actually creates MORE downmarket opportunities.
So keep on spending. Me and the rest of the bottom-feeders will thank you for it.

Not everyone may understand, but I do. It probably made you feel damn good. Back during a different time in Patpong many of us kept cars and drivers full time. I saw my brother take a little girl selling gum. Have the driver take her to the market, buy 1,000 baht worth of food and then take her home.

I think it basically boils down to helping others less fortunate that yourself. In LOS, you can help out tremendously with just a few hundred baht, and to us it's just a few beers or so.
So, with this in mind, it doesn't cost much to give a little happiness and hope.

Just as an aside, re the shoe boy, has anyone tried to bargain with them...... my last trip Soi 22 shoe boy wanted 60B I say no 50B after 10 mins (i kid you not) I have to give in to 60B... and of course well worth twice the price.....
What made me think was what are these kids going to grow up into as they are as hard as nails over 10B at what ever age....
But best laugh was the shoe boy wanting to play pool with me for money he could hardly see over the bloody table... bless him.....
