Personally I would guess that given the continued real estate slump in the USA, the sub-prime disaster and the recent consumer spending trend that the Fed will drop the rate another 1/4 to1/2 and the dollar will go lower for a bit until the lower cost of capital makes the foolish little guy take on more debt and stimulate the economy a bit. When that occurs the dollar will start to get stronger. My crystal ball says about 6 months. With the lower employment numbers etc. Bernanke can't sit on his hands. He will likely have to act. Having said all that I have about 60% of my personal investments diversified broadly and the remaining 40% in cash.

I don't think Bernanke and the Fed have the least bit of interest in preserving the value of the dollar - I think quite the opposite is true.
Just last month, the Fed was saying that the threat of inflation is just as great as the threat of a slowdown in the economy. Now it is cutting rates as the DOW is near its all-time high, and gold and oil prices are exploding.
If the credit markets don't revitalize in the next few weeks they'll lower the rate again in October, no matter where the Dollar, Gold, or the DOW are. They don't give a damn about the Dollar. They are setting up an inflationary trend - as the Fed prints more money it has to go somewhere...

You need to be carefull quoting commodity prices because they are (for some dumb reason) is quoted in $US
Gold against the EURO has actually fallen in the last week.
Its a double trap when you talk gold mining stock. As you know Aus is one of the largest gold producers,, people see gold go up 5% in $US terms and jump into gold mine shares,, LOL But as the $US is loosing ground and the $AUD is gaining, profits are actually falling in real terms.

Yes, you are quite right... but your point also supports my point! It's not so much that the value of gold and oil are going up, than it is the value of the U.S. dollar is going down, ie, inflation. Sadly (for me, since I earn US dollars) I see this trend continuing for some time... but on the bright side, it's one more reason to get the hell out of here!

I have won several legal cases on this issue in regards to software that used the STUPID month/day/year format and was not compatible with normal formatting.
The widely accepted format, is now YEAR/Month/day,,gives great benefit in accessing data in sequential order.

We Yanks call it the metric system, not the metrix system. We are intelligent enough to use either the metric or imperial system whenever it best suits our purposes.
BTW, the metric system uses base-10 arithmetic, which is completely arbitrary (it is used because humans have ten fingers). A truly scientific/mathematically based system would use base-2 arithmetic, which is how computers operate.
