it's an argument best left to them, but Indonesia seems be the actual origin, at least as recorded by the Dutch... in any account it is slightly diff. in TH vs. ID, vs. MY I'm sure the one in SG is just a copy of the Malay version.

its called moo steak locally... usually 3 baht per stick from roadside vendors... good ones? so far, open air market opposite central rama 3 and another one opposite the river.. (dont know the road name but know how to drive there)... too difficult to find for most people, I know, what I have mentioned here..

slowx is exactly right. As most Thai's for Satay and you get Moo steak (Pork on a stick) is the common name hear served with the peanut sauce and onions/cucumbers in vingar. The food stalls just outside of Nana are actually pretty good and they have a lot of selection of various meats and seafood that are barbaqued on the spot. You won't get the local Thai 3 baht price, but they are easy to find.

they are NOT saying Moo Steak, it is Moo Satay the signs in Thai confirm this, if you could read them... and if you cannot pronounce it correctly I feel just a tiny bit sorry for you...

What makes a difference if it comes out of their mouth sounding like "steak" and if you say "satay" they will not understand what you are saying. The point of communication is getting yor point across "steak" gets me something to eat, "satay" just a dumb look.
