I've got a couple of friends coming over and they are Vegetarian (not Vegan or anything strange like that). I know many restaurants that have several veggie dishes on the menu, but does anyone know of any place that specialises in Veggie food.??

yes,

there is a great one on sathorn soi 11 (I am pretty sure)...anyway its just before the entrance to Assumption Prathom on the same side.

For the life of me I couldnt tell you the name, but it is a stall...where you choose 2 or 3 selections from about 8 pans...it includes soup.

I remember 3 or 4 items that were very tasty ( FYI I eat steak like its going out of style)

I am sorry about my vaugeness and hope another BTF member can assist with specific directions....

later,
atl

I had this same issue, when friends of my from the states came in, I will say its hard but not difficult to find.

almost all Thai places add fish sauce and oyster sauce to the dishes even when vegetables are there.

When looking around or asking locals, ask for "Jai" food most chinese places and some Japanese places carry all sorts of this...

some places...

almost all Indian places serve vegetarian foods, along with Italians (I know pasta gets redundant after a while)...

there is japanese place packed everyday (forget the name of it) located in Soi Thonglo, coming up on the right hand side if from the BTS. Same building with Zen, Seefah and Sizzler, on the third floor, has lots of mock meats and Jai food.

May Kadee in Khao Sarn road which also carries vegan food as well.

MBK food court, 6th floor, has a place with a large Vegetarian Food sign.... about 40-60 baht from what I remember... kind've oily also... or actually most food courts in major shopping venues and office buildings have Jai or vegetarian food, I think the United Center on Silom had a place that carried about 10-12 different dishes, and changed them daily as well.

Chinatown is equally good, especially with all the Chinese-Thais that are vegetarians as well.

I believe you're thinking of Tamarind Cafe, a very upscale vegetarian restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 20, Bangkok (02 663 7421). It's a very eclectic place with excellent food and an photo-art gallery. It is one on my favorite restaurants in BKK.

Enjoy!

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 24 December 2010 :-

Loving Hut @ Royal Garden Plaza,
Charoen Nakhon Road
=====================

This 14-month-old meat-free restaurant definitely deserves to be a favourite destination for keen vegetarians as well as (unconverted) meat eaters.

An international chain vegetarian restaurant with support from the United Nations, Loving Hut's missions is to help save the planet - meaning to combat global warming, water shortages, air pollution, animal extinction, land degradation and deforestation - simply through what we eat.

There are many factors that will make you fall in love with the Bangkok's Loving Hut. First and foremost is the fact that its food is truly delicious, let alone that its menu offers as many as 150 gourmet dishes that come with very reasonable price tags.

The extensive menu displays incongruous words like "duck", "pork", "fish" and "seafood", but all are made strictly without any animal products and by-products.

The No.1 must-order dish is the Burmese tea leaves salad (120 baht) - a brilliant concoction of hydroponic salad leaves sprinkled with roasted peanuts, tomatoes, shallots, brittle imitation pork floss, bird's eye chilli and sour, sweet, salty and spicy homemade tea leaf dressing.

Japanese "eel" with sesame (90 baht) is also a bestseller here. The imitation fish, made with compressed layers of tofu skin, yields a sweet and salty taste and a soft and smooth texture.

You'll be amazed by the Peking duck (85 baht) which wonderfully mimics the famous poultry dish. The "duck" comes rolled with vegetable sticks in steamed rice flour sheets and is served with vegetarian hoi sin sauce.

Another addictive dish is spicy larb salad with mushroom crisps and herbs (90 baht) that perfectly captures the flavour profile of the sour and spicy larb.

Keep some room for steamed fish with ginger and spring onions in soy sauce (100 baht). Because of its magnificent sauce and the lack of a fishy taste, even when the dish turns cold, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Chocolate buffs will be delighted with the super soft and smooth homemade brownie (65 baht), made without any dairy products.
