... a GREAT pastrami sandwich!... not just a 'get-you-through-the-night-until-you-get-home' pastrami sandwich, but a great sandwich.
... found it, oddly, at an out of the way shopping mall called the Crystal Design Center (CDC), located out on Ramindra Expressway... the mall specializes in home furnishings.
... the mall is huge, and properly designed with nice public areas for sitting and eating, but it is a commercial flop... the place was empty... like, day after the plague, weird, empty... elsewhere in this section, a member writes that the restaurants on offer here make it worthwhile, but I would not want to own one of the furnishings stores for which this mall was created.
... this jewel of a sandwich can be found there in the New York Cheesecake (02-102-2065... http://www.mynewyorkcheesecake.com ), which occupies a modest 4m x 8m modular building in the public areas between the mall buildings... few seats... limited menu... but, the pastrami is their killer app... the Thai owner lived in NYC, and gets it.
... an honest half pound of imported pastrami (seems more), just-cut onions, ripe tomatoes, lettuce, deli mustard, rye bread... I pitched the 3rd slice of bread at mid-sandwich, which is uneeded... no garnishes... no chips... no distractions from the main show, but none needed... a magnificent sandwich.
... I can eat, and did finish this sandwich, but was just short of being uncomfortably stuffed... all for THB 279.
... can't believe the stroke of luck finding this place, but to add to it, the cheesecake here is also killer... New York style... nothing light and fluffy about this stuff... dense... like cutting into a slab of bacon... my mom was a NY'er, and it is as good as hers... a single slice will reasonably feed two farang... THB 179.
... what a glorious find this place is... too bad they were lured into such an out of the way, dead location... at off-peak hours, about a 25-30 minute taxi ride from mid-Sukhumvit, but worth the drive.
... the "Crystal Design Center", or CDC, is not to be confused with "The Crystal", a neighborhood shopping center located just across Ramindra Expressway... (is there not one, single original thought in this entire country?).

Yes, NYCC New York Cheesecake, its been open for more than a year over at CDC. used to be very popular with take away...their cakes are flown in as well.
the pastrami sandwich has been hit and miss IMHO... good to hear they figured out the bread issue [it used to be white bread] but they're still putting all the tomatoes, lettuce, onion - I guess it takes place of a side salad.

... a NY'er, you will be hard to please... let's face it, you just can't find the heroic deli sandwiches, for which NY is famous, outside of NY.
... NY Cheesecake takes a good run at it, and would be comparable to what you might find in a deli in a major US city... but, rising to a NY standard?... no... it doesn't... but, few do.
... still, here in the deep waters of Asia, it is so worth it.

... otherwise, if you are really hungry and hurting for a great sandwich and a monster slab of killer cheese cake, I am really not reluctant to suggest that you make the sojourn out to CDC... it's a pretty good bet.
