Does anyone know how to get a good, ripe Durian? I'm no good at picking fruit I am familiar with, so I hate to even try. Are there reliable vendors or stores? I have read all the negative things about them but I still want to try one when I get the chance.

First, durian has a season, so it would need to be in season. Whenever that is. Second, go to a bar beer. Strike up a conversation with someone you fancy. Ask her if she likes durian. If so, ask her to help you find a good one. They might not want it at the bar (depends on the place) so you might have to take her off some place to eat it.

Durian is theSultan of fruits. Wonderful stuff. Unfortunately, Thai durian is too sweet for my taste. Better of with durian from Malaysia or Indonesia where the fruit is a bit bitter.

True. Beer and durian don't mix well. Best not to eat too much at one go, as it tends to expand in the gut. Good idea to drink a bit of water with some table salt mixed in after eating durian. Helps get rid of the bloated feeling.

on a serious note, the peak season is in april and may. i try to avoid the markets and supermarkets then. the unmistakable stench is just everwhere. and they're available year-round these days, if you know where to look for them.

me too am quite fond of durian....its simply delicious.

Wouldn't "good durian" be an oxymoron? I will never allow my first ex-wife or any of my future ex-wives to keep it in the house. My theory has always been.......
