Rack of Abs,

You never told me you were an Italian lover...

Caronte is THE Italian Stalian - you only have to look at him to see he knows his food;)

We should hook up when I'm back in bangers next week for an Italian meal - but dont let Caronte see me put parmasan on my seafood pasta...

Hey what's up based up this thread I tried and failed to find Giusto's on Suk 19. After walking 1/2 a kilometer up and down the Soi I gave up and settled for "La Grita" next to Country road. They have a new chef working there since Feb. Excellent food, presentation and service. This will make "Las Grita" one of my top three.

"You clearly know your Italian food so perhaps you could comment on some of these restaurants

1. Scoozi. yen akard.
2. Antonios. Suk 31 (owned by brother of Scoozi owner)
3. Calderazzo's. Langsuan.
4. Gianni's same area

These (along with Zanotti's are basically my faves... looking for something interesting in Suk.)

And what gives with L'Opera (Suk 39) - the Italians I have met love it but I have never had a good meal there.

Oh, and finally, what are your top 3 BKK Italian restaurants. "

Hi Abrak,
here my answers:
1. Scoozi: besides not having a real Italian name, the food is ok, but what makes this place worthy is the manager, not the owner...Paolo, the restaurant manager has a great personality, very pleasant, a good and natural entertainer and it's amazing seeing him flying around the tables..he can run the place alone!

2. Antonios: forget it! another case of a former factory worker turned into a chef.....anyway, the food they serve is from a town in NE Italy not famous for its cousine....

3. Calderazzo: if you go, you won't die but you won't even miss it anyway....

4. Gianni: surely the most popular and respectable Italian restaurant of the area and one of the favourite among the Italian community....owner is kinda sucker tough....

L'Opera: a sort of institution but the owner is such a sucker that is mixing second grade Italian ingredients with local stuff just to increase his profits....he was just lucky to open a quite impressive restaurant in a very good location....plenty of money done, but quality is so-so...perhaps the new wine bar next to the restaurant is much more worthy a visit.

My favourite places?

1. Limoncello soi 11
2. Bella Napoli soi 31
3. Giorgio's at the Royal Orchid Sheraton, but only the Italian chef is there and willing to prepare some special food only for his close friends..

Buon appetito!

How about the spaghetti bog at Gullivers. I caught someone in there eyeing it off last night, inbetween trying to play pool with his missus giving him lessons.

With apologies to the moderator... "extremely" good Italian would make for a very short thread. My takes on the better known Italian venues:

1. Scoozi - best Italian in Bangkok for my money, and reasonably good ambience. Superb foie gras, very professional service. Obscure location on Soi Bamphen.

2. Antonio's - Spotty, and the shophouse ambience can be a little rough. The mezannine is better than the ground floor, unless you can get the booth at the front window. Tony definitely tries hard, (overbearing might be a better word) but he hasn't hit the mark yet.

3. Caldarezzo - a dog. Now (mercifully) closed, I believe?

4. Gianni - second only to Scuzzi, except when the owner lets his golden retreiver into the dining room to roam around. Eccentricity pushed too far

5. Giusto - On Suk 23, not 19... near the Tai Pan hotel. More about trendy than about solid performance on the food. Moderno ambience is distracting and chairs so uncomfortable that even good food wouldn't bring me back.

6. L'Opera - no surprises. Italian for the undemanding. Demonstrates (along with PanPan) the importance of being "first to market" and a prime location.

7. Pan Pan - even fewer suprises. Uninspired formula Italian prepared to Thai taste, with desert bar for the kids. 20 years with the same menu items... no Italian spices permitted on the premises.

8. Zanotti - overrated... ambience very authentic but quality on the food side is thin. It's important to like crowds if you dine here, and be flexible about service.

9. Bella Napoli - great pizza (and pasta) in a breadbox space, if that's your thing. Crowded... there is often a line to get in.

10. Toscana - simple "trat" operation with decent food. Pastas are the best bet... can be loud. Some game on the menu like wild boar. Great tiramisu.

11. Lino's - very similar to Toscano but even simpler. Excellent homemade pasta with specials featuring imported ingredients like Italian mushrooms. Could use some customers... especially at lunch.

**How can 3 different Italian shophouse restaurants (all breadbox size) survive on the same soi? What is this, North Beach?

12. San Remo - sterile environment offputting, but decent food.. pizza-with-the family type place and pizza is the best bet. Antipasto bar is disappointing...

13. Mabeba - started out good but has declined. I would now rate it as ok at best... interior designer should be hunted down and shot.

14. Paesano - see L'Opera above except the patrons are from the surrounding embassy district. More proof that most diners are undiscerning about both the food and the ambience.

15. Limoncello - very good at what they do (mainly pasta and pizza) but too cramped for my taste. Whose goofy idea was it to design round menus the size of a large pizza that are almost unreadable?

16. Zanzibar - Italian in name only... food memorable, but for the wrong reasons. The only good thing about the place is the parking.

17. Fino - food uninspired, but great location in the heart of Suk 33. At lunch, you are likely to be the only patron. I wish this place was better because it's so handy.

18. La Gritta - better than you would guess from the appearance of the place... handy to Country Road.

19. Hotels - every 4 and 5 star hotel has an Italian venue... it's an unwritten law. Several are pretty good (La Scala/Sukolthai, Grappino/Watergate, Giorgio's/Sheraton, Biscotti/Four Seasons) but better suited for expense account dining; wine prices always extortionary. Spasso is a notable exception; appalling food and in-your-face-bad service... dance venue yes, restaurant... no.

Great stuff Deep File....

If you have a few minutes could you edit and put in the location. Just a simple "Suk 31" or whatever.

(and thanks for the reviews Caronte)

I thought about adding location, but googling that info is better since you get hours/phone/etc also.

- but dont let Caronte see me put parmasan on my seafood pasta...

Oh! he is one of those?

When it comes to food, after one has tried what the experts say, one is free to like it differently. I like parmeggiano so much that I also put it in many things.

Better to be true an authentic to one tastes. I also at times drink red wine with seafood -nothing than to drink bad white to spoil a meal. A mediocre read is more passable than a mediocre white.

Somehow agree with what 3cazzi said. Though I have not tried many of the italian restaurants mentioned in the thread, I have found that for some reason -perhaps the ones he gives- the tastes of many dishes in these restaurants are a bit bland and similar accross all of them.

My guess is that, they figuring people here won't bother much, to save money they import what in Italy would be second class quality ingredients.

There is a restaurant far in the outskirts of the city -will have to ask for the name to a friend that lives near it- that the owner brings good ingredients and subsequently has very good dishes. He is having some success due to the good taste of his cusine and is thus selling pre-cooked stuff to hotels across LOS and to some airline catering companies. I will get you the name and location over the next couple of days.
