It's been hit-and-miss for me at Outback here. Twice I was satisfied, twice disappointed. Last night I tried Chokchai, strolling around Soi Cowboy waiting for the bars to open. They offered a special set price menu of filet mignon (870) or rib eye (770) with small cesar salad, cup of lobster bisque and scoop of ice cream. Choose the fillet, 2 pieces served on a sizzling hot plate with baked potato and veggies. The meat was quite tender but not particularly flavorfull. Mushroom gravy on the side helped, as did a carafe of Austrailian wine. Also added a cappuccino and check bin was 1700, including a 10% service charge, but didn't leave hungry. Topped off the meal with a fine cigar, pulled a dancer from Sharks, then was ready for some serious end-of-year drinking. Soi Cowboy bars open till 5 AM this morning. Happy New Year.

Report from Bangkok Post dated 12 August 2011 :-

The Outback chain's Bangkok outlet lives up to its promise
=====================================

It has been nine years since my last visit to Thailand's sole outlet of the Australian-themed steakhouse. The Outback Steakhouse at Siam Discovery Center in Bangkok, which I decided to go back a few weeks ago, is now among about 1,000 outlets of the Outback empire worldwide.

Unlike most Outback restaurants (well, mainly in the US) I've been to, the recently renovated Bangkok branch looked quite modern with its sixth floor location and extensive glass walls that stretched from end to end, allowing lots of natural light in and a panoramic view of the city.

Before progressing to the meat-packed dinner, diners are spoiled for choice when it comes to drinks. We (a party of four) ordered the tropical fruit shake (99 baht), chocolate milkshake (99 baht) and the tazmango mohito (199 baht) _ all of which proved to be superb.

And the milkshake, in particular, was one of the best shakes I've ever had! Perhaps it was the buttery hot fudge and bit of malt infused into the not-too-thick or overly sweet drink that did it. As for the fruity cocktail, the taste was luscious thanks to the sweet and aromatic zest of mint, lime and mango.

The meal then officially kicked off with Outback's three best-selling appetisers: Kookaburra Wings, Aussie cheese fries and crispy calamari _ which all came on a platter (329 baht) and are ideal for sharing.

The trio of treats was served with two kinds of dipping sauce: a superb creamy and salty blue cheese dip, and a far less impressive salsa that tasted more like ketchup.

Of the platter, the chicken wings, though battered and deep-fried until very crispy, offered a pleasant taste with the familiar hint of Buffalo-style spice. And they tasted great with or without the blue cheese dip. The French fries, which came laced with melted cheese and bacon bits, were a bit too mushy after sitting on our table for a short while. The squid rings, also battered and seasoned with black pepper, were crispy on the outside and pleasantly rubbery on the inside.

An equally impressive appetiser was the crispy shrimp Caesar salad (299 baht), which presented the classic Caesar salad but flavourfully enhanced with fried shrimp coated with sweet and salty Asian chilli sauce. The salad was crispy whole romaine lettuce, refreshing and naturally sweet, that was seasoned with smooth and creamy Caesar dressing and thick balsamic vinegar reduction before being drizzled with fresh tomato cubes and grated Parmesan cheese. Meanwhile, the shrimp lent a delicious flavour and pleasant suppleness.

The Victoria filet (999 baht) was our choice of steak and it proved to be the star of the meal. The medium-cooked 8-oz medallion was plump, super tender and juicy yet very lean in character, and was served unseasoned with lots of vegetables, including green peas, carrots and zucchini (courgette).

The restaurant also highlights its Baby Back Ribs (599 for full-rack and 379 baht for half-rack). Served with French fries, our full-rack order was so big that it could comfortably be shared among a group of four or five people.

The grilled pork ribs, thoroughly brushed with barbecue sauce, presented a great portion of meat, into which the tangy sauce penetrated deeply. (It would have been even better if extra barbecue sauce was offered on the side). The meat easily fell off the bone; a truly succulent and tasty dish.

For those who shun red meat, the Alice Springs Chicken (399 baht) _ Outback's most popular poultry dish _ is definitely worth trying. Juicy and in a large serving to gratify even diners with a big stomach, the chicken breast was flame-grilled before being seasoned with sauteed mushrooms and strips of bacon, as well as melted Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese. On the side was a bowl of honey mustard, which was a bit overly "honey" for me, though.

Finally, the Chocolate Thunder Brownie, Cheesecake and Banana Nut Cake made for a sweet ending to the meal. Each can be ordered separately or together as a Sampler Trio (399 baht). The cheesecake, which I loved the most, was the perfect combination of sour and cheesy silky cake and rich and buttery hot fudge. The Banana Nut Cake was also delightful, but the Chocolate Thunder Brownie proved to be too sweet for me.

The Outback Steakhouse (Siam Discovery Center) is staffed by both Thai and Filipino waiters, whose service was brisk and efficient.

As far as good steaks go, I have found that the Marriott on Suk by Soi 4 is pretty good, although over priced.

The hard par tis that if you are used to a high quality steak it is very hard to accept the pricing and quality of red meat in Thailand. I travel quite a bit and I prefer steak form New York and Chicago although the cost for the highest quality meat is very high. Europe and Australia have a different flavor and I wa snot raised on that type of flavor so it takes some getting used to on my part.

Everyone has their own taste.... much like wine, if you like it drink it, if you like the taste, eat it.

I am partial to rib eyes...... I like that flavor of fat flavoring my meat to some degree. Filets are just too bland for me.

As much as I love steak, is there really anyhting better than a hamburger at 3 A.M.?
