How's about another one. Has anybody tried Mizzou's Kitchen on Patpong lately?

They used to have a decent steak but this was 10-15 years ago.

Anybody now?

After 7 weeks in Siberia, I could eat shoe leather. In fact that doesn't sound like a bad idea. Only 2 weeks to go, then off toTenderloins Soi 33 for lashings of steak and wine !!!.

ffe,
I will do a trade with you. You bring us some cool weather from Siberia and I will supply you with FRESH aussie prime rib steak and a couple of superb beef sausages.

US beef is no longer banned.... just has to be frozen or very well chilled (though some suppliers still say its still frozen, and then chilled to allow some dethawing)

Correct, but even all through the ban last year they were still serving USA beef.

ThaidUp,

Where at???

I have only ever seen frozen US beef from that place in Mercury Tower across from Central Chidlom when the ban was in place.....

other places I have been too would say US beef in their menu (but then place a small note '*' and say that they were in fact either aussie, japanese, or argentina beef) or if you knew the owner you would get them to admit to it.

some places --- even say imported beef when in fact its the local Thai-French product

Yes JA, your intrepid reviewer has surveyed La Paloma steak house on Suk 39, which opened last weekend, but dates back ~20 years at their lower Silom location. I wish I could recommend the establishment, but there is more downside than upside... I found it very disappointing... awful straight-backed chairs, flammable tablecloths and napkins, goofy old Vienna (?) decor with fake flower arrangements, terrible paintings, mortuary window curtains.. smelling of new paint, even though the walls are ceramic tile. Music much too loud. Menu awful... 4 colors of ink, lousy font. Service awkward, the "walking on eggs" type... and the guy ground pepper on my salad without being asked.

How did the stupid pepper grinder thing ever get started, anyway? Why should a diner need help applying pepper to the food (which frequently has pepper on it already) ? And for the help to grind away with the damn thing before even confirming that the customer wants pepper?? This one has always mystified DF.... apologies for the digression.

Standard no surprises menu, range of angus steaks, (they claim to have U.S, but only the tenderloin), pork, fish.. the usual. No pasta. Pricing fair... nothing north of 1K. Wine list about 40 labels, mix of origins, all unknown, no vintages indicated... all cheap. What can only be described as hopeless. No corkage was charged, but my bottle was already open, which sometimes confuses the servers.

The so-called "caesar" salad was all iceberg lettuce, with toothcracking bacon bits, factory croutons, soft (mozarella?) cheese grated on top... vaguely mustardlike dressing. The ribeye was not bad... tender and cooked correctly, but flavored with a fake smoke marinade... edible, if you don't mind meat that tastes of chemical smoke. Chocolate mousse average.. decent.

Needs at least a month for paint smell to wear off... but even then there are plenty of better venues, and better steaks. It would most definitely not qualify as a "Steak House" by any definition... and a much better ribeye can be found just down 39 at Philippe's at the same price.

Mizu's Kitchen is an institution... and a throwback to an earlier era (opened on Patpong in the early seventies). Absolutely unique on the planet (or at least what I have seen of it)... the owner is Japanese, and he serves "Sarika" beef from a ranch upcountry. There is nothing special about the beef, but his staff marinade and tenderize the beef... turning it into a reasonably edible steak at a very attractive price.

The place itself is a dump... roaches on the walls, service very much random... but with an ambience that should be experienced. The Sarika steak is served hot off the grill on a metal plate with the cooking steam still roaring off of it... with a simple side of mashers and spinach. This is not fine cuisine, or even a memorable steak... but the character of the place more than makes up for it if you're the type who sometimes enjoys a serious "greasy spoon" ambience with a unique Bangkok twist. Also offers a range of Japanese and Thai dishes. The entry door is a bit obscure... about 200M south of Suriwong on the right.

There's more info in the PP thread... I think. And the curtains have not been cleaned since the day they were hung, over 30 years ago.

They where still in business late last year, good food at very reasonable prices if a little difficult to find! As you come of Silom Road its on the left side of Patpong towards the far end, hidden behind the market stalls.
