There's a Chinese Restaurant between Soi 18-16 on Sukhumvit that is reasonable for the price. Has roasted ducks hanging outside along with dim sum. Inside is typical chinese seating (basic) with many dishes you can order. I got the roast duck and various dim sum. Not San Francisco or Hong Kong, but decent.

Update: Its really between Sois 14-12 right under the Asok BTS. Near Suda. Its called the Thongkee.

More restaurant comments:

Wanted to try a Middle Eastern Restaurant mentioned here, but forgot to bring my notes. Wandered Sois 3 and 3/1 and finally settled on Petra "Best and Delicious Arabic and Lebanes Food". I wasn't real hungry, so just got a banana shake and hummus with grilled meat. Banana shake was very good. Pretty small portion of hummus with meat bits on top. I assume it was lamb although it was hard to tell. No utensils, so I waited and waited for the pita bread. Finally one of the waiters came to tell me they were making the pita especially for me (I was the only one in the restaurant at about 11am). Pita came and was nice and hot. Hummus and meat bits were good. I usually judge a middle eastern restaurant heavily on the hummus - this one passed. 190bt for it all.

Fuji in Siam (maybe Siam Discovery Center but I am not sure) : went there with 2 of my Uni Girls. We got a nice booth and just talked for about 30 minutes. Server came once and we ordered drinks. Didn't return for a looooong time. Finally, one of my girls told me she thought the server was mad because we didn't immediately order and were just talking. The other one giggled and said, in English, "We are customer, customer always right, eh?". We all laughed at that. We ended up ordering california rolls made into the shape of a catapillar, some salmon, and fried pork. All of it was okay, but not up to the standards of a top notch place. After we ate, we must have talked for another hour before the bill came. We didn't mind - decent place to sit and talk, plus refills of green tea and water. Total bill 540bt - the girls said to not leave tip (although there might have already been a service charge added).

at siam discovery on the 5 or 6 floor [ on the same floor as the movie theatres ] there's a very good restaurant [ don't know the name ] with three different
menu's; Thai, Japanese and italian and also some chinese food.
All the types of food are good quality and inexpensive.

Oldtimer
Oldtimer still goes to Cabbages and Condoms sometimes. Its such an unusual place, thus useful to take out newcomers there. The food is reasonable if one hasn't eaten too much Thai grub before. Also, there are not too many places where one can eat outside in that part of Bangkok...save the street food stalls.

Most important, of course, is that going to C & C supports a very good cauise. Khun Mechai's PDA is one of the most innovative NGO's in the whole wide world.

Went to the "Egyptian Restaurant" on the first sub-soi between Soi 3 and Soi 3-1. It had been recommended by another poster some time ago.

I looked on the menu and found no hummus. Asked the waitress and she pointed to some long sentence that had something to do with ground up bean-like things (yes, I know what hummus is made of), and said "that is hummus". Okay, but would be nice just to lable it hummus. Got that and pita bread.

Also got a banana shake (very good) and their special, a roasted leg of lamb with roasted vegies.

Hummus was not as tasty as Petra's around the corner. Lamb was okay but not great - vegies were actually better.

Total bill: 350bt, 200bt of which was the special.

Some places I rate above average:

* Love Scene (suk soi 23) :
Small place, very good service, excellent seafood, good prices and open late.
Mixed clientele including quite a few 'instant' SC couples but also lots of young Thais who pop in after they have been to the fitness center across the street!
* Cabbage and Condoms: it's kinda cult place but good to take you visitors to, food is ok but not that special.
I rate Love Scene higher in terms of price-quality ratio.
* Thon Krueng (Sukhumvit Soi 55, Thonglor), one of the best places in Bangkok to eat Thai Food, packed with Thais but also Japanese who live in that area. A lot of families there. Good prices and excellent food and service. When sitting at a table near the window on the street side you might experience a beggar standing near your window and constantly looking a you and you food. A small donation to him might help to get rid of him (this happened before when I had a meal with a TG at one of the open-air Isaan restaurants at soi Rangnam, she gave him 20 Baht to f&^k off).
* 13 Coins: A chain of restaurants mainly in bkk, I think the best value in town especially their steak-seafood combos, had a meal there with a TG including such a combo, some drinks and apetizers voor 500 Baht, unbeatable price, good service.
* Anna Cafe (Soi Convent) : good Thai Food and excellent draft beer (Paulaner style), not far from Patpong. Can sit outside there also.
* Derby King (Patpong 1, near Lucifer disco) : very good and cheap Thai food, they also do catering to the bars in PP. Try the Tom Yam Kung here !
* Cafe the Paris (Patpong 2, near Foodland) : very good peppersteak here for 250 Baht, when sitting outside the view is unbeatable also.
* Livingstone's (Sukhumvit Soi 33, near Novotel) : Very impressive and pleasant place in a former private residence, you can sit outside dining by the pool, excellent International and Thai food, good service and very good draft (wheat) beer (also Bitburg draft).
See the pic here:

Well I can go on and on, will post some more later !

Cheers

I went to the Korean BBQ Restaurant in Washington Sq, several doors before Bourbon St.

I thought it was very good. Ordered spicy pork with vegies. Good size portions. The meal also came with 6 condiments (bean sprouts, leafy green vegetable, turnips, kimchee, fried tofu with chili, and some kind of white vegie root that had the consistency of meat). Plus rice.

All for 250bt. Way too much food for one.

I haven't been to Korea, so I don't know about authentic, but there were a couple of Koreans there as well. As good as the better Korean places I've been to in New York and San Francisco.

Spicy - so you need to really like spicy food.

I try to do Auberge Dab for lunch each time I'm in town, for some excellent French food, very professionally prepared and presented, fine service, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices (for the fixed-price lunch, anyway).

Check it out, sometime. In the Mercury Tower, near Chidlom skytrain stop.

I tried Pasand, the Indian Restaurant on Sukhumvit at Soi 12 almost under the overpass.

Food was pretty good, although expensive. 60bt milkshake, 90bt basmatti rice with saffron & cumin, 170bt for cottage cheese, vegies and curry. Add VAT and it came to about 350bt. If you get a meat dish it will be more.

They got the bill wrong the first time, but corrected it quickly. And, as I said earlier, the food was good.

My TGF found out where I ate and wants to try it to. You do? I thought you would only eat Thai food. I want to try, she said. So, I might take her here in the next day or two. If so, I'll add a postscript.
