Anyone tried the new Steak House that fills the void that was Spearmint rhino?

It's big, but I have never seen anyone in it, going into it, leaving it......

Texas Steak I think it's called.

ThaidUp,

Where at???

I was referring to Neil's Tavern that was supposedly serving USA beef during the importation ban last year.

It's a moot point now anyhow and even as such I will not be going to Neil's unless trapped into it.

Ok anyone got any good places for Argentinean steaks?

How about?

El Gaucho Steak House, 217/4-5 Asoke Tower, Sukhumvit Soi 21,

or

A l’etage French restaurant in the Sukhumvit 39 complex

Deep file you put all the Thai newspaper retaurant critics to shame.

Somehow I feel that there is a story behind the checking for flammable tablecloths and napkins

"No corkage was charged, but my bottle was already open, which sometimes confuses the servers. " Hey there is a trick

Deep File... I am in awe! Can't open a restaurant in Sukhumvit area without you getting there first. Disappointed to hear about La Paloma. I had visions of a good Argentine beef house.

Not a steak joint but how about Cafe Des Artists- Soi 31?

I won't argue, but somebody's gotta do it.

Just for the record, the "official mad cow ban" was never enforced... most venues (Neil's, Park Ave) continued to offer U.S. beef... the notable exception was NY Steak for the obvious reasons (American and publicly traded).

Yarune... I dropped in to the new Texas Steak outfit (on Sawadee just off Suk 39) and it was so uninviting that I could not work up the ambition to sit down and order... it features a cheap cafeteria style decor and the help were like deer stuck in my headlights. It appears to be a clone of Chokechai Steakhouse on Suk 23, which is just too downmarket and funky for my taste. I try to be tolerant, but I draw the line just north of where Texas Steak falls... life is just too short.

TU: tablecloths and napkins are just like shirts... it's fabric that comes in contact with my body during a meal. In a country like Thailand where 100% cotton (or linen) is affordable and laundry is cheap, there is no excuse for a restauranteur who employs some Rayon blend that will not absorb anything and is revolting to the touch. I can deal with a bare table.... even paper napkins... but petroleum-based (flammable) fabrics in a restaurant are not acceptable. Period.

A L'Etage is located on the corner of Suk 39 and Prommitr, with offstreet parking and a valet in the evening. It's the kind of place you want to like, but which comes up short for reasons that are hard to describe. The food (French for anyone who doesn't know that "a l'etage" means upstairs) is forgettable... the sauteed foie gras for example is fresh and cooked correctly but comes coated with an unidentifiable spice (cumin? cinnamon?) that does not work at all. The "rack" of lamb is actually two chops, very average meat, with a side of white beans and bell pepper coulis... AND a heavy brown french style sauce.... like the chef is desparate to do something that qualifies as "fusion". On my last visit I ordered pigeon (a new menu item) despite it's steep pricing.. (1,300b compared to 850 at Philippe's) but the chef emerged from the kitchen to announce that he was "out" of that item.

The place is small, and cozy... there are 3-4 table with couches that make for romantic seating... but the servers are hard work... too fussy about the linen, wine pouring, etc... but also apt to wander off for long periods. They do offer an Argentine steak, at 3,200b if memory serves me... but there are just too many loose ends at A L'etage to give it high marks. And it definitely does not belong in a thread about steaks, so I'm off topic....

Argentinian beef is showing up at many venues that offer steaks, but very few are really focusing on it exclusively and fewer still feature an authentic ambience. Churrascaria Grill (in the basement at President Tower) is probably the closest, but it's origins are Brazilian.

While I'm on a roll, Tenderloins is now offering a U.S. ribeye priced at about 950b. It's reasonably tasty, and far less money than the competition... the problem is enduring the "Sports Bar" ambience... televisions roaring with some sporting event, concrete floors that compound the noise, undersized metal-backed chairs that say "don't sit here long".... and grill fumes pouring out of the open plan kitchen that make you fell like you are part of the cooking process instead of a guest.

Been to Steak One last night...had a bad meal.

Ordered an Aussie rib eye for BHT 650. The piece of meat I got was definately NOT a rib eye. It was shaped more or less like a rib eye, but the grain patern was all wrong, as it was all parallel to the plate. It was tough and chewey. One could only guess where the meat came from.

This is probably why the T-bone cuts were so much more expensive. The management could say I had a boneless cut, but you just can't fake the bone in the T-bone/Porterhouse cuts.

Sadly, I felt cheated, and won't be going back again. Too bad, as I love the location of the place.

Not to quibble, but I kind of like the open kitchen design of Tenderloin. I can see exactly how clean the kitchen is, and I can keep an eye on the sanitation of the cooks. If your steak falls onto the ground there, you can assume that it will at least be washed off. Pretty tough for a cook to hawk a big lugie onto your steak, too.

I do find it too loud, at times. On the plus side, the honchos there are very cool about turning off speakers near your table, if you need to have a conversation and cannot hear.

See that's is what I like about BTF, where else can you get review comments about the Anti-lugie factor in a review, not the Bangkok Post or even The Nation.

Well Deep File based upon your scathing review of La Paloma we decided to try out a new French Place. Jack Attack and I were hoping for just once we could beat your ass to trying out a new place to eat in Bangkok. Semi-review here:

Funny....but your assessment is exactly how I feel just driving by it, not worth the effoert.

What with the Spearmint Rhino failure, looks like a lot of laundered money coming out of the other end.

It isn't the "open kitchen" at Tenderloins that is the problem... this open plan kitchen concept has taken the culinary world by storm over the past two decades, and can be a great contribution to the ambience of a restaurant.

My issue is with the ventilation... the basic configuration of TL's is just too small (and low ceilinged) to properly support an open grill... there is too much overflow of cooking vapor and smell into the dining area. I would have located the grill along the back wall of the kitchen area, rather than the front counter next to the seated diners. Except that then the useless expat manager would have nothing to lean against all evening....

The problem is not so noticeable toward the front of the establishment... I would recommend sitting at the front "bar" area to minimize this problem... from where one can enjoy an excellent view of the nocturnal wildlife on 33....

Well, it does get very warm at that back corner table, right next to the grill. It is too hot, frankly, and when the joint is crowded, their air conditioning struggles a bit.

As for the "useless expat manager," I got to say....the guy has always hooked me up, and provided personal, excellent service. I think that he (and the Thai guy who backs him up) run a very decent joint. For the price, I think that it is the best steak joint in Bangkok.

I have no personal interest in the place. I just go there a couple of times a week.
