The US has fine steaks, anything prime or CAB is pretty damn good. I just looked at the Lowake website and I am not impressed by their menu selection nor prices as they seem to be a little on the inexpensive side. But that's not to say they can not have a good steak...

Mel Gibson, steaks are not BBQ'd. They are grilled and actually lesser known "secret" is that they are seared. Grilling is not the same as BBQ. Steaks do not even need to be grilled to taste great. In fact, I've found the best cooking technique to be pan searing on cast iron and finished in a high temp oven. This gives the steak the best, most even sear and sears the fastest. Some steakhouses have special high temp ovens that can sear very similarly but can do higher volume.

Great steaks can come from several parts of the world. Australia and even New Zealand has fantastic meat. Argentina, Brazil... Japan has their unmatched kobe. It depends what you like. Kobe is forgiving and will even taste great well done. I'd say that 60% of a great steak is how you prepare it, the other 40% is the meat. Who's better? Australia or America? I prefer American beef but that's just me and I'm probably biased. But to call it lesser quality if you're trying to infer that Australian beef is better is completely wrong. People have preferences on what type of cut they like the same as they have preferences on the origin of their beef. Given the same steak from down under or here in the US, I prefer the marbling of the US prime.

Obviously you don't like seafood, but your taste in steaks and your post make sense. You can get good beef from anywhere, even including the US.

I have eaten at Lowake many times and the food is outstanding. When I was last there, you picked your own beef from the display cooler and they cooked it to your specs. Really cold beer and good beef.

My first ex-wife and I used to drive from Midland to Lowake, 135 miles one way, for dinner on a weekend night and stop in Colorado City, TX, on the way home for the best Chocolate Meringue pie you ever tasted.

By the way, "inexpensive" in West Texas is good.

Now Now Rodney, you are lucky as this is the one thread where flaming is part of the discussion! Until and unless one has tasted inbred trailer park inhabitants' semen, one should not be so hasty as to pass judgement. By the way, would that be better taken on the side?

I am more concerned with the JW martini situation than with the taste of semen. And it would seem the Polish storm trooper needed help from JW to get his new steakhouse right!

Nothing wrong with US beef, just ribbing yah,,,

But I do prefer my steaks BBQ'ed, flame grilled whatever you want to call it, Kobe beef has been genetically crossed into Aus cattle over the last 15 odd years and has definately made a difference at the top end of the market.
I must say the Thai steak I have tried is nowhere near the same quality as US / Aus / NZ beef but I do like their black, wild stock, pigs,, yummm.

If only we could get the Thais to learn about bread and coffee from the Vietnamese then we could really party!!!

Being that I am in Austin I think I will buzz over there for dinner, hell its only 90 miles, just down the road a piece.

Another old time great steakhouse is The Red Barn in San Antonio. All of their steaks come from thier own ranch. Now these steaks may not be as tender as the grain-fed beef most people eat but when you tucker down into a 1 kilo T-bone with the unique taste that only range-fed beef has, you know you are in heaven...
